Here are a few take aways from the FSANA, Flight School Association of North America conference in Las Vegas... (fsana.com)
1. Having an "outward-facing" person or persons in the school is important in terms of maintaining a finger on the pulse of the industry. Professional development is the first thing to go when things get either busy or tight.
2. It is important to "see" everything and everyone; but it's also important to "be seen" over and over again. Participate and weave yourself intro the fabric of the community. We all know that aviation is a small community, boy is it ever true.
3. If I could be bold enough to suggest a pivot for the organization, it might be to reinvigorate the focus on small and medium sized schools. FSANA has all of the infrastructure in place for this, it's built into their mission and ethics statement, to which we all agree. This doesn't happen top-down though, this is the responsibility of us small to medium sized business owners to step up to the table and offer content and support to the board of directors.
4. Be bold and engage in committees. I need to do this!! The opportunities are all there, go to their website and click on committees. Volunteer and follow through. I pledge to put my $$ where my mouth is on this...
5. I'll speak for myself... I shook many hands for the second and third times here. I listened to the government representatives, enriched my understanding of current initiatives and issues, learned from peers in breakout sessions, actually presented my views in my first such session, and enjoyed the company of friends.
I'll definitely be at the next conference, and as I said above, I'll be engaging more deeply with this important organization throughout the year to come and beyond.
If you are a flight school operator of ANY size, one plane to a hundred, you will benefit from membership in this important organization. More importantly you will be supporting FSANA in it's mission to serve us!
