Guess where we are this week? We are at ESA Industry Space Days 2024 in ESA ESTEC, Noordwijk, discussing one of our favorite topics: space 🚀 The ISD is organized by the SME section in the European Space Agency - ESA Directorate of Commercialisation, Industry, and Competitiveness to foster cooperation between different actors in the entire space sector! We are glad to be here and to be a part of this community! Carlos Ribeiro Paulo Antunes Filipa Carneiro #piep #esa #europeanspaceagency #esaindustryspacedays #space #defence #aeronautics #spacesector

Maxar Space Systems, a leading provider of comprehensive space technologies, announced it has been selected by L3Harris Technologies for the design and production of eighteen Maxar 300 spacecraft platforms and associated support for its Tranche 2 Tracking Layer program with the Space Development Agency (SDA). This selection builds on Maxar Space Systems’ existing contract with L3Harris for the Tranche 1 Tracking Layer, awarded in 2022. The Tranche 2 Tracking Layer will enhance SDA’s capability to provide global, persistent indications, detection, warning, and tracking, of conventional and advanced missile threats, including hypersonic missile systems. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gVXMMiFh

France is getting serious about space defense. In addition to the Graves Radar for targeting, France is waiting to launch its first YODA patrol satellite in a near-GEO orbit. It has also initiated the TOUTATIS demonstration to launch the Splinter and LiSA-1 demonstration satellites in LEO. Splinter looks like a laser demonstrator, and LiSA-1 is an NEI satellite. France's military programming law through 2030 has a project called BLOOMLASE for a ground-based laser blinder and FLAMHE for an orbital laser system. I'm glad France is revealing what it is doing to aid with deterrence. https://lnkd.in/eBAdmkTZ

The People’s Liberation Army is working comprehensively on the technology and training tools for on-orbit satellite refueling for both peacetime and wartime scenarios. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is already integrating lessons learned into military doctrine and training tools, while a defense contractor has already demonstrated what it calls a space fuel tanker in geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO), according to a report published by the China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI) March 18. The report underlines that the PLA has a strategic focus on enhancing its on-orbit logistics capabilities and is integrating commercial enterprises into the space sector. These developments have potential implications for international space operations norms and should prompt action by the U.S. Space Force to attain similar capabilities and readiness. #satellitetechnology #satelliteconnectivity #satelliteinnovation #spacetech #spaceinnovation

The Space Force’s Space Systems Command announced Jan. 26 that additional vendors have been selected for the Sounding Rocket Program-4. This is a multiyear contract where companies compete for orders to launch small rockets used to carry scientific instruments and experiments into suborbital space. Kratos Space & Missile Defense Systems, L3Harris’ Aerojet Rocketdyne Coleman Aerospace, and Corvid Technologies were awarded indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contracts for Sounding Rocket Program-4. Sounding rockets are small test vehicles that carry scientific payloads that are put into space for short periods of time, usually for a few minutes. Contact CRG for pre/post award support. Euronews' Pascale Davies has her finger on the pulse of the fast-paced evolution of the space sector with her article on the role of commercial enterprise. NorthStar Earth & Space is one example of how NATO can augment their space capabilities with innovation from the private sector. Our space-based space domain awareness (#SDA) high-precision services simultaneously monitor all earth orbits 24/7, from LEO, MEO, GEO to Cislunar. This has taken years of development with dedicated teams, partners, and customers, working together for #SpaceSecurity and #SpaceSustainability.

A well researched and compelling description of the state of play in protecting and defending our vital space-based capabilities. “Control of space has become as important as dominance on land, sea and air. Space technology makes military forces in all other domains more powerful. Lose primacy in space and you risk losing wars on Earth. In any future conflict between America and China, for instance, satellites would be essential to finding and destroying targets across the vast distances of the Pacific Ocean (see China section). Much about warfare in space remains hidden, and most of what is known comes from America. What is clear, though, is that America is intensifying its effort to preserve its edge in space.”

I would like to take this opportunity to correct the record regarding my statements and background. First, we are known as the Air Self-Defense Force, not “Course.” As such, our new name will be the Japan Air and Space Self-Defense Force (not course). SDA satellites are scheduled for launch in JFY 2026, but I didn't mention anything about a "constellation". JPN-US cooperation on QZSS Hosted Payloads is ongoing, but I did not connect this cooperation to SDA. Finally, I did say that I looked forward to future discussions at COPUOS, but I did not mention any expectation of discussions on the military front. #ascendspace

🚀🌌🔄 The United States Space Force will soon test the ability of its experimental X-37B spacecraft to rapidly change orbits using what it calls “aerobraking maneuvers” in space. During the test, the X-37B will utilize the drag of Earth’s atmosphere to slow down, allowing it to swiftly move into a lower orbit with minimal reliance on propulsion engines. This conserves fuel, enabling extended mission duration and range. “This first-of-a-kind maneuver from the X-37B is an incredibly important milestone for the US Space Force as we seek to expand our aptitude and ability to perform in this challenging domain,” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman noted. #military #army #defense #defence #defenseindustry #defenceindustry #defensetech #defencetech #militarytech #technology #innovation #us #unitedstates #usspaceforce #guardians #space

I have been reading very good commentary lately about saving the ISS. Attached is a TechCrunch article I dropped in 2017! I think Rick Tomlinson has a really good idea. Our mutual point is the ISS is a national treasure. We should do whatever we can to save it. We maintain and sail the USS Constitution. We maintain and allow younger generations to walk through our retired aircraft carriers and battleships from WWII. The ISS can be more than a tourist attraction. It is space infrastructure which can be re-purposed. Let's be creative. Let's Save the ISS! [Link to the article for more details: https://lnkd.in/ekqd3F2b]
