Young innovators eye prestigious CHIA Healthcare Award As we approach the 11th Tanzania Health Summit in Zanzibar, I’m reminded of the power of youth innovation in healthcare. The CHIA Healthcare Innovation Award has, over the years, served as a launchpad for some of most impactful solutions in Tanzania—paving the way for a healthier future. This year, three young innovators with their projects—Akili Yangu, TanzMED , and the Automated Suction Machine—are set to showcase their ideas, competing for the prestigious CHIA Healthcare Innovation Award 🎖. As Dr. Omary Chillo , our president at the Tanzania Health Summit, emphasizes: “This award provides a unique opportunity for young innovators to showcase their ideas and potentially transform the healthcare landscape.” In the same breath, the #THS2024 highlights the need for supportive regulatory systems that empower these innovators. As I recently shared: “Beyond investment, Tanzania’s health innovators yearn for systems that enable them to navigate the complexities of innovation, especially in the era of artificial intelligence.” Read the article below;⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dXnntGD3

Uniting Africa Through Digital Healthcare: #Telemedicine and digital healthcare hold significant promise for uniting all countries in #Africa by addressing numerous healthcare challenges and fostering regional cooperation. Key ways we can achieve this: 1. Resource Optimisation: • Shared Resources: Countries can share medical expertise and resources, reducing duplication and improving efficiency. • #Training and #Education: Digital platforms can facilitate the training of #healthcare workers across the continent, ensuring a consistent quality of care. 2. Standardised Healthcare Delivery: • Uniform Protocols: Telemedicine can help in establishing and disseminating standardized treatment protocols and guidelines. • Quality Control: Digital health records and teleconsultations enable better monitoring and quality control across different regions. 3. Enhanced #Data Collection and Management: • Centralized #Health Records: Digital healthcare systems can enable centralized health record systems that are accessible across borders, improving patient continuity of care. • Epidemiological Surveillance: Improved data collection can enhance disease surveillance and management, crucial for controlling outbreaks. 4. Collaborative Research and Development: • Joint Initiatives: Countries can collaborate on #research and development projects, leveraging digital platforms to share data and findings. • #Innovation Hubs: Digital health can spur the creation of innovation hubs and startups focused on healthcare solutions tailored to the African context. 5. Policy and Governance: • Harmonised Regulations: Regional cooperation can lead to the harmonisation of regulations and policies, facilitating cross-border telemedicine practices. • Health Governance: Digital tools can improve health governance, transparency, and accountability in healthcare delivery. 6. Public Health Initiatives: • Health Campaigns: Digital platforms can be used to run public health campaigns across multiple countries, increasing reach and impact. • Emergency Response: Telemedicine can enhance emergency response mechanisms, allowing for coordinated efforts during cross border health crises and Disaster response. Primary healthcare and technology Day 2 of the Medic East Africa and Medlab East Africa event proved to be wholesome. The panels held interesting discussions in both matters health policies and integration of digital solutions. Highlight of my experience was interaction with Dr Radha Karnad who is the lead, Strategy Partnerships and growth at HealthX Africa and was also a panelist in the discussion; Revolutionizing healthcare in Kenya and East Africa: Exploring the impact of disruptive digital technologies on healthcare delivery and access. Even though there have been significant revolutions in the health sector in achievement of primary healthcare such as adoption of AI and telemedicine, there have also been various challenges. Some of the recommendations suggested to curb these challenges were: • Use of technology that encompasses the African community. This includes systems that have been created using data on African demographics. • Address the social determinants of health. These include matters such as lifestyle, living conditions, access to information and even economic ability. As both panelists for the discussion said, we cannot accurately predict what healthcare will look like in a couple of years because new technology comes up every now and then. There is just so much that can be achieved through the collaboration of the health and technology sectors even in achieving primary and universal health coverage in the longrun. #MedicEastAfrica #MedlabEastAfrica

So excited to read of this engagement by the African Union (Africa CDC) The #digital gaps in #health particularly where it applies to information access and #healthliteracy access should be a core focus by our leaders as we look at innovative health responses. Harnessing the digital space will drive the expansion of #universal health coverage by addressing #access barriers, bridging the infrastructure barrier and sharing health service #information. The #telemedicine approach will allow health responses to reach hard to reach areas and the #rural and underserved communities. Things like digital consultation and delivery of medications will benefit #communities affected by economic challenges and #poverty. Governments need to invest in digital health initiatives.
💡 Collaborating to Drive #DigitalHealth Transformation Across Africa! We recently convened the AU Member States Digital Health Leaders Forum and hosted a panel on “Perspectives of Digital Health Implementation in Africa” at the Africa HealthTech Summit - AHTS, in collaboration with Africa CDC. These events provided a unique platform for digital health coordinators from African Union member states’ to share insights, learn from one another, and strengthen collaboration. While many countries face similar challenges in implementing their respective digital health, their solutions often carry unique perspectives that can inspire new approaches elsewhere. By bringing these voices together, we can foster a stronger, more unified movement towards sustainable digital health transformation across the continent. We remain committed to enabling collaboration and peer learning among member states, recognising the critical need for improved continental coordination to achieve #digitalhealth transformation in Africa! #AHTS2024 #Innovation #Health #HealthEquity #DigitalHealth #AfricanUnion #Africa
