The Rafael Kuusakoski Memorial Fund has awarded grants totaling €48,300 to support young researchers and projects focused on Baltic Sea birds, marine ecology, climate, and landscape conservation. 🕊️ The awarded projects explore topics such as forest integrity and corridors on wildlife species, the impact of climate change on wildlife habitats, the effects of wetland management on bird biodiversity, the changing environment of the Baltic Sea, the role of standing dead wood in nature conservation, the effects of drainage and restoration on beetles as well as the incubation behavior of long-lived seabirds under ecological stressors. The bunyip bird is endangered, while the brolga is listed as vulnerable in New South Wales. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss and other environmental pressures. Jessica Weir co-authored an article, “Bunyip birds and brolgas: how can we better protect species important to Indigenous people?” recently published in The Conversation. The article examines the gap between Western conservation methods and Indigenous cultural values, advocating for policies that better integrate Indigenous knowledge to protect species like the brolga and bunyip bird, which are vital to Kamilaroi culture. Our Ecologist Jack Kay snapped this shot during our wintering bird survey in Flint last week, offering a scenic view of the Dee Estuary from his location.   The main goal? Spotting RAMSAR and SPA bird species.   RAMSAR sites: These are internationally significant wetlands that have been recognised by the Ramsar Convention, a global agreement to protect these kinds of habitats. RAMSAR sites are recognised for their ecological significance and support a wide variety of bird species.   SPA (Special Protection Areas): Under the EU Birds Directive, SPAs are established to conserve habitats that are essential to the continued existence and growth of specific bird species. These regions are essential to preserving biodiversity and preserving the survival of endangered bird species.   Both RAMSAR sites and SPAs play important roles in protecting bird habitats and promoting biodiversity conservation in the UK and beyond.   #naturesurvey #ecology #biodiversity #wildlifeobservation #planningpermission

Recently, an individual explored the themes of ecology and decolonization, drawing inspiration from "The Big Conservation Lie" and the paper "Decoloniality and Anti-Oppressive Practices for a More Ethical Ecology." These readings resonated with their work in "Dreaming In Calcutta And Channel Islands," where they challenge the dominant Western-centric views on wildlife and conservation. In their book, they spotlight the often-ignored contributions of non-Western scientists such as Ram Brahma Sanyal and Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. This perspective aligns with recent critiques of traditional conservation strategies, advocating for a shift towards more inclusive and globally aware approaches. As they argue for a decolonized approach to science, they emphasize the importance of balancing inclusivity with ethical considerations, ensuring that no group's practices are legitimized without scrutiny. "Like other whales, the species was driven nearly to extinction by commercial whaling. But unlike other whales — such as humpbacks, grey whales and blue whales — it has been much slower to recover. Populations of right whales are larger in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as in the Southern Hemisphere. North Pacific right whales were favored by hunters because they swim slowly near shore, and float after death. By the late 1800s, as many as 40,000 North Pacific right whales had been slaughtered." Research papers on urban ecology often use bird hotspots to identify where birds can be spotted. One common indicator is the "eBird hotspot." While useful, it has limitations as bird hotspots often coincide with popular birding sites such as parks, conservation areas and even backyards. The impact of bird proximity on well-being is well documented. However, relying on incomplete data such as bird hotspots can bias the analysis and lead to erroneous conclusions. To address the lack of data on bird presence in non-green spaces, we collect our own data and shared it through our interactive sound map. Stay tuned for more updates as we get ready to update our map with new data.

The Gold Coral, Savalia savaglia In the Sea of Marmara, Savalia savaglia, commonly known as gold coral or false black coral, forms dense assemblages within coralligenous communities. Due to its unique biology and ecology, its colonies can reach heights of up to 2 meters, and the presence of specimens over 100 years old can be considered an indicator of relatively pristine communities. Over the past 40 years, this species has been severely impacted by illegal collection by scuba divers and by its morphology, which facilitates the entanglement of nets and fishing lines within its branches, causing significant damage. As a result of its rarity and the ongoing threats it faces, the species has been listed in Annex II of the SPA/BD Protocol of the Barcelona Convention and Annex II of the Bern Convention. Although there are few studies providing data on the distribution of this species in the Sea of Marmara, much more research is needed. Last year, TUDAV discovered a new area of distribution, where dense assemblages of Savalia savaglia were found alongside other members of the coralligenous communities, such as gorgonians and sponges. Currently, in Türkiye the species is legally protected according to the national legislation (Official Notice for Regulating Commercial Fisheries of Water Resources, No. 5/1).
