TJ, on the left, started with Hanssen over 10 years ago as a teenager without previous employment history. He was spotted by the company Chaplain at the time sweeping one of the factory floors in a way that didn’t reflect any form of cleaning. TJ was asked by the Chaplain “What are you doing?, because you’re not sweeping, you’re just moving dirt around?” TJ hadn’t been taught to sweep, he was taught to occupy time but not take personal pride in the work he produced. The Chaplain took the broom off JT and systematically showed him how to sweep, meanwhile teaching TJ some principles of work ethic, being a man and taking responsibility for his own destiny. TJ was fascinated that someone was so passionate about sweeping floors, not understanding at the time, it was more than just sweeping; it was to develop an attitude that would secure his future employment prospects. Like TJ, many go through the motions which is not really acceptable as a work ethic only because they are not taught otherwise. It’s great to hear TJ laugh today about some simple yet invaluable lessons he’s picked up from a broom 🧹 on the factory floor. 10 years later TJ is still employed and developing life skills along the way. He’s just been assigned to Aurora for a season as part of the finishing team and we all know that Toppy (on the right), the site leader, is all about work ethic. #workethics #reliability #mentoring #nextgeneration

Bravery! At #JFFHorizons on the mainstage, Maria Flynn, JFF President and CEO, highlights how a lack of bravery is holding us back as a field for three reasons: 1) The fear of retribution 2) Fear of change 3) Fear of the unknown. Thank you to MHI: The Association That Makes Supply Chains Work Solutions Magazine for giving me the opportunity to talk about one of the subjects that I'm most passionate about: people. Our Steel King Industries, Inc. team works tirelessly to attract and retain the best team, and boy, do we have some great ones. However, that doesn't mean it's always easy. Check out the article for some thoughts on how companies in the supply chain and material handling space can evolve their people strategy, and if you know of good people, send them our way!
Steel King's Chairwoman, Stacy Atherton, recently sat down to discuss expanding the recruitment pool, upskilling and promoting the industry. Check out what she had to say: "One of the silver linings of COVID-19 was the spotlight on the supply chain. Our employees were deemed critical and continued working, and people realized how important every position in the supply chain is to every aspect of their lives."

📣 Insights from the Disability Employment Australia People and Culture Forum Today, I had the privilege of attending the Disability Employment Australia People and Culture Forum where Parkhouse Bell Australia delivered the results from a recent survey of Middle Managers in Employment Services . The discussions were insightful, shedding light on some critical trends and opportunities in our field: Turnover Rates on the Rise: Both involuntary and voluntary turnover rates continue to remain high (over 40%). This highlights the need for strategies to enhance employee retention and engagement. Leadership Gaps: A significant number of middle managers are promoted from front-line positions without formal leadership training. This gap underscores the importance of equipping new leaders with the skills they need to succeed. Focus on Training and Development: Middle managers identify training and professional development for their front-line teams as crucial for increasing job outcomes for clients. Investing in our teams is investing in our clients' success. Value of Micro-Credentials: Micro-credentials are recognised as valuable tools for upskilling both middle managers and front-line workers. These credentials can provide targeted, practical knowledge to enhance performance and career growth. The forum was a reminder of the dynamic nature of our work and the continuous need for growth and adaptation. Thank you Disability Employment Australia, Helen McAnally and James Weait FIEP for providing a forum to discuss and strategise as a sector. Let's continue to support and develop our teams to better serve our clients and communities. 💡 Call to Action: At Bounce Global, our programs are designed to support leaders and front-line staff in developing crucial communication skills using evidence based coaching frameworks. These programs have shown impressive results, with some organisations recording over 90% retention of staff who have completed our Job Coach Certification program. Explore our programs at www.bounceglobal.net and see how we can help your team thrive. #Bounceglobal #Coachingskillsforleaders #jobcoachcertification #DisabilityEmployment #PeopleAndCulture #ProfessionalDevelopment #Leadership #MicroCredentials #EmployeeEngagement #JobOutcomes #ContinuousImprovement
This morning, the privilege of supporting Parkhouse Bell Australia as they shared the results of their recent survey of Middle Managers in the Employment Services sector as part of Disability Employment Australia's very first People & Culture Forum. As ever, hugely insightful stats and commentary from Helen McAnally and Samantha Smith that no doubt provided attending senior leaders with thoughts, considerations, possible strategies to reduce attrition and help better support the extraordinarily complex role of frontline, multi-site, performance and compliance management for leaders in our sector. #employmentservices #employment #jobcoaching #disabilityemployment #populisolutions #diversityinclusive #recruitment #career #hiring

As always, I am willinig to roll up my sleeves and help wherever I can. Here is my latest remble: To: State Officials County Officials City Officials NAVAL SEA SYSTEMS COMMAND I am writing to propose a collaborative effort between our state, county, city officials, and the Naval Sea Systems Command to acquire and repurpose vacant shopping centers near our naval shipyards. Inspired by successful models such as the Air Force's partnership in Oklahoma with the old GM plant, I believe a similar arrangement could benefit our community and naval operations alike. The vacant shopping centers present an opportunity for us to enhance our facilities and improve working conditions for shipyard employees. By acquiring properties collectively and leasing them to the Navy, we can ensure that the space is utilized effectively and optimized for our needs. For example, spaces within the shopping center, such as a former Forever 21 store, could be repurposed into specialized workshops like Shop 51 Electrical Workshop. Additionally, allowing individual shops to name their own storefronts could significantly boost morale and foster a sense of ownership among our workforce. Moreover, it's noteworthy to mention that our government often finds funding for professional sports facilities; therefore, it's only logical and fair to allocate resources towards initiatives that directly benefit our national defense infrastructure and the livelihoods of our citizens. This partnership not only serves our immediate needs but also stands as a testament to our prioritization of essential services over recreational ventures. Moreover, this initiative would contribute to the revitalization of our community. Instead of leaving empty storefronts and parking lots, we would be repurposing these spaces in a way that benefits both the Navy and local businesses. The presence of better facilities and amenities would not only enhance employee satisfaction and productivity but also attract further investment and economic growth to your area. I propose that our state, county, and city officials work together to acquire the vacant shopping centers in their respective areas and lease them to the Navy for a nominal fee, similar to the arrangement made by the Air Force in Oklahoma. This partnership would demonstrate our commitment to supporting our naval operations while also leveraging underutilized assets for the benefit of our community. Additionally, by providing the Navy with improved facilities, we can anticipate an increase in job opportunities within the area, further bolstering economic growth and prosperity for our residents. Thank you for considering this proposal. I am eager to discuss this further and explore how we can collaborate to make this vision a reality. Sincerely, Forging the Future Hon. Nickolas Guertin Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) PMO 555 Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
