The University of Texas Permian Basin is proud to announce that we served just under 7,500 students in the 2023 academic year - a high mark for the University and up 7.5% over last year! As we celebrate this achievement, we turn our focus to the new academic year and a very strong start to 2024. We are thrilled to share preliminary enrollment numbers for fall which, combined with the summer ‘23 semester, signal the start of a new academic year. This semester we welcome over 1,100 new students to campus. This success remains consistent with last fall’s record-breaking new student enrollment. Fall ‘23 enrollment continues on an upward trend, and although final numbers will not be available for a few weeks, we expect an increase of about 1% or around 5,775 students. This move is expected to enhance education and economic prospects in the Permian Basin, where the PSP has already made significant investments totaling over $1 billion in areas like education, healthcare, and workforce development. The Society of Economic Geologists Canada Foundation (SEGCF) was established in 2000 to raise funds for and promote the science of economic geology by funding education, research, publications, student support, and public outreach. Since then, SEGCF has raised approximately $2.5 M in funds from individuals and corporatations who share our committment to economic geology. In an era when governments are cutting back on funding for such research, individuals and corporations can direct their charitable contributions to the SEGCF and be assured that their contributions will directly support undergraduate and graduate students engaged in cutting edge research in economic geology and thereby further their development as skilled economic geology and minerals exploration professionals. We want to ensure that we attract the "best and the brightest" students into economic geology. As the fund grows, we hope to continue to increase the level of support for student research and to undertake a broader array of research and educational activities, such as field trips, short courses and symposia organized by SEG Student Chapters, and other innovative projects that support education and research in economic geology. The next update to our #mudlog, #DST, and #core inventory spreadsheet is going to be well worth a new download! Midland Energy Library is excited to announce that we are working on incorporating our latest #donation into the collection. It consists of 37 boxes of data from Tall City Exploration, which so far includes 5 boxes of mudlogs (and counting). For some of these wells, the mudlog is the only data available. The donation includes more than a dozen boxes of new large scale large logs (including many interpreted log prints) in Howard County, alone. Plus a similar number of boxes of Prospect Files from around the #PermianBasin. The collection also includes quite a few digital log records (both #LAS, and #rasterlog formats). Watch for our posts, and we will let you know when the updated inventory is available on the MEL website. Speaking of donations, MEL is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are #taxdetuctable! If you are thinking of getting rid of your paper library, whether it is composed of logs, DSTs, core reports, core photos, or even petroleum related books, don’t just throw it out!! Consider a #donation to MEL or another organization (#nonprofit or not) to help preserve this valuable (and sometimes very rare) data. So, until next time….
