In light of the recent deliberate, bigoted takedown of now two female leaders of prestigious learning institutions (with the black one being the 'trophy target') by powerful defenders of a substandard status quo, we find this SSIR piece from 6 months ago to be most on point, as it discusses the importance of Dream Capital for black women in the start up ecosystem. "If we believe in the power of Black women leadership, we have an imperative to create more opportunities for dream capital. Here’s the thing: Black women and girls have long imagined and built solutions that propel our nation forward with limited capital. But right now we have the opportunity to break a vicious cycle of burnout, unfair expectations, and unsustainable solutions. Solving deep, systemic issues requires us to expand our thinking outside of the confines that have long been set. It requires us to tap into our full imaginations and dream of bigger, deeper, and more sustained solutions." https://lnkd.in/eMJ3TPky

Merline Saintil and Robin Washington have no shortage of experiences, success and opportunities between them. Merline, a software engineer turned Silicon Valley COO and investor, has taken 6 companies through IPOs not to mention sitting on several Fortune 500 boards. Robin, a leading Corporate CFO, sits on some of the most well known Fortune 100 boards. There is no doubt of their success in breaking barriers and glass ceilings, and now through their organization Black Women On Boards (BWOB) they are paying it forward by honoring the women who went before them while bringing the next generation along. With a focus on sponsorship, coaching and mentoring BWOB aims to remove the invisible obstacles that Black female executives face when pursuing board seats. Since their inception, they have successfully placed dozens of members onto boards while maintaining a sharp focus on investing in the next generation of executives coming up behind them. But their work doesn’t stop with BWOB. Through their film ‘Onboard’, Merline and Robin chronicle the rise of Black women on America’s corporate boards. This film is not only a testament to their commitment to fostering diversity in the corporate boardroom but celebrates the achievements of women breaking barriers and serves as a call to action, sparking important conversations about talent that often goes unnoticed. Around the world, we see examples of women rising up to serve and advocate on behalf of the betterment of their community. Merline and Robin’s work is another great example of how a committed individual can really move the needle on important issues. Learn more about BWOB and the 'Onboard' film here: www.bwob.io

Extract-While Black women leaders are at the forefront of innovation, they “are operating in unprecedented times, with mounting barriers and challenges to their leadership—driven by systemic inequities deeply embedded in sectors and systems” (5). The foundation’s report responded to the stories they were hearing by gathering a group of Black women leaders and letting them speak unapologetically about their experiences and the steps needed to reverse this trend. Tamara Wilds Lawson, president and CEO of the foundation writes, “Their words call us to take collective responsibility for ensuring Black women and Black gender-expansive leaders have the resources and support they deserve to thrive in this sector which relies so heavily on their valuable labor” (3). The report seeks to answer one core question: “What measures must be taken to provide Black women and Black gender-expansive leaders with the support, resources, and infrastructure they need to thrive as they lead?” Thanks for sharing Caprice Taylor Mendez
Thank you for this article. It underscores having a board of directors that understands and is proactive in support of black female leaders. I am feeling very blessed.

I met the most wonderful women as a panelist at last night's Leadership Women event on Women Leading in Sustainability and Equity! Thank you Melissa Lee for highlighting my comment about investing sustainably: "If resources continue to flow to problems, we get more problems. If resources flow to solutions, we get more solutions." #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #sustainableinvesting
Going into today inspired after attending Leadership Women’s panel on Equity and Sustainabily at Atlanta Regional Commission. It’s been a difficult few days on campus at UGA, but last night reminded me of the power that women hold. We are uniquely qualified to make a difference in a world that’s been doing things the same way, for a long time. In my handful of notes, this one rings truest for me as a fundraiser: If resources continue to flow to problems, we get more problems. If they flow to solutions, we get more solutions. Thank you Shannon Caldwell for inviting me and to Donna Finale, Anna Roach and Nancy Sagar for sharing your experience! (📸 Reminding me that it’s been a decade since I was an Atlantan)

Starting 2024 with gratitude for what's to come this year. A change maker is someone who rather than talk takes action, someone who advocates for others even when they are not in the room, someone who uses their social capital and influence to do the right thing. I hope to live up to that expectation and hold my values with integrity and humility. I am a servant, nothing more. Welcome 2024 and all the lessons ahead. #leadership #latina #gratitude https://lnkd.in/eqnec6PF

BEYOND DEI Are you committed to diversifying your board, but need help getting started? Following the events of the past few years, organizations in the United States and around the world have begun to commit to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their organizations, and are seeking to realize these ideals in their workplace. They recognize that this must include their board of directors. But where to start? How do you introduce the topic and the work? This webinar will examine DEI through an intersectional lens as it applies to nonprofits and their board members. • Current Board make up and equitable work force. • Inclusivity and the extensiveness of diversity. • Defining equity and how it takes shape in different cases concerning diversity. • Strategies to make our organizations more equitable and that allow for continuous learning and improvement. The speaker, Izabella Martin, is a Manager at the New York Council of Nonprofits. She has a graduate certificate in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) Leadership from the Harvard Extension School and a BA from Russell Sage College. DETAILS: When: Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, Noon - 1:00pm, EDT Where: Online. A link will be sent to all who register. REGISTER HERE: https://lnkd.in/eVqKf3HZ
