Dr. Carole Berotte Joseph's story is an inspiration to us all. As the first Haitian American to be named a college president in the United States, she has faced her fair share of challenges. In a recent interview, she spoke about the racism and intolerance that Black women face in society, and the personal reinforcements that emerging leaders need to overcome these obstacles. Dr. Joseph's words ring true today, as we see Claudine Gay and other Black women leaders facing similar challenges. It's clear that we need to do more to support and uplift these voices, and ensure that they are not silenced by the prejudices of society. Let's all take a moment to reflect on Dr. Joseph's words, and consider what we can do to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for Black women leaders. How do the quieter moments contribute to your leadership? From Spring 2019 to February 2020, I participated in a collaborative project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This initiative focused on the often understated, but significant moments contributing to the Equity-Responsive Leadership work I lead StrivEquity Consulting LLC. Although the project did not fully realize its goals of equitable design, approach, and outcomes, it offered me invaluable experiences. I had the chance to interact with social justice leaders from various sectors, including housing, the criminal legal system, immigration, business incubation, and emergency services. These interactions, along with insights from my colleagues, enhanced my understanding of Pittsburgh's history of racial segregation, disinvestment, and substantial inequities. This was particularly evident in the health outcomes for Black womxn. A report released during our project timeline notably excluded this community from its design and execution, which you can read about here: https://lnkd.in/e6VfTq-3 Many of you may relate to the challenges and opportunities that arise when facilitating and supporting grassroots leadership in an unfamiliar city. Finding the right balance between offering your perspective and actively listening is essential for understanding the dynamics of a place. Amid this extensive listening, it was the less intense, informal interactions that resonated with me the most. For example, during my hotel stays, I had two memorable conversations with Black hotel staff members. Their comments, such as "It's good to see a brother on that side of the counter" and "It's good to see a brother staying in the hotel, not just working in it," hit home. They didn't know me, but they expressed a sense of pride and recognition. They underscored the significance of my presence and the role I played, challenging the norms and historical access barriers for Black men. While these staff members were unfamiliar with my political analysis or purpose in their city, their words quickly reminded me of the power of representation with the importance of the values and principles we embody in our roles. I urge you to reflect on similar experiences in your leadership journey. Consider those meaningful yet subtle moments that are often left out of your professional bio or not used as leverage to establish your legitimacy in traditionally exclusive spaces. Dimensions’ highest calling is to assist leaders in recovering a deeper sense of their humanity through liberatory practice and relationships. Our liberation is tied to building together, and we hope you apply and share with any women leaders in your networks! Our programs are: BLAC (Black Leaders Allied for Change) creates space for Black women executives, philanthropic leaders, and senior professionals to deepen their capacity for antiracism and Liberatory Practice within a diverse and dynamic network of Black and brown women leaders. BLAC gives shape to what a Black woman’s BEing holds beyond her DOing. BLAC convenes experts in the field of racial equity and beyond to explore resources that center the necessity of Black women’s joy, peace, wholeness, and well-being as measurable outcomes for successful racial equity work. All cohort sessions are virtual, except for the Facing Race conference on November 19th-22nd 2024 in St. Louis, MO. JWOC (Jewish Women of Color) creates leadership conditions for Black women and women of color to experience sustained wellness and rest. JWOC programming explores rest as resistance through liberational tools for dismantling Anti-Blackness and Anti-Black Racism in the systems that BIPOC women navigate. JWOC empowers BIPOC women to examine their personal ecology practices as drivers for positive change within their lives, families, and communities. WDR (White Women+ Dismantling Racism) is cohort experience that brings together white women+ professionals who have committed to the work of moving their allyship to accompliceship. Through monthly online sessions with leaders in white anti-racist work, an in-person experience at the Facing Race conference in November 2024, participants will leave with new and refreshed tools for their accomplice work to Black Women and Women of Color in their lives.
