FINALISTS!! 🏆 In the Supporting Apprenticeships category at the Nachural Entrepreneurship Midlands awards... It's great to be recognised for the work we do with apprentices, a big thank you our contracts managers and electrcians for helping provide quality training. The awards are on the 12th of April held at Leicester City Football Club, where we'll be up against some great local businesses. Apprenticeships are absolutely vital to us at Glenfield Electrical but also as an industry as a whole. My apprenticehsip years ago at Electec was excellent and really helped me along the way, without it I wouldn't be in the position I'm in now. Which is why I believe in apprenticeships so strongly for both school leavers and career changes, male or female. Last year 49% of electrical contractors experienced a labour shortage, so that's why it's so key to develop apprentices, especially as electrification is necessary for the Net Zero transition. Last week saw the announcement by Treasury of a ‘Growth Pilot’ which will lead to increased funding for 13 apprenticeship standards which are supporting key industries pivotal to future macro-level productivity and economic success. At SIAS, we've been eagerly anticipating this development, in what remains a challenging funding landscape, and we welcome this as a positive move forward for the apprenticeships sector.   The inclusion of three standards where SIAS maintains a market leading position – Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician, Level 3 Laboratory Technician, and Level 3 Machining Technician was pleasing to see – and is a testament to the relevance and significance of these standards in today's industrial landscape.   Steve Smith, Managing Director, said: "We warmly welcome the growth pilot announced by the government, aimed at stimulating training in 13 high-value advanced manufacturing, engineering, green industries, and life sciences standards."   “The selection of these standards reflects our stakeholder discussions, identification of skills shortages, and areas with room for growth. Today, meet Salutatorian Landon Doty of the WECA Utah Commercial Electrical Apprenticeship Class of 2024. He works for WECA Utah Founding Member Contractor Hunt Electric, Inc. "Having gone to other schools first, I can confidently say that I would love to have started from the beginning with WECA," says Landon. "We discussed some of the curriculum that my class didn't get to cover elsewhere, and some of the material that we did get to cover at WECA...I can only imagine how much better it would be to have gone through WECA sooner." "WECA is fun. Having many more labs than previous schools was a treat. WECA also gave me access to many concepts, products, and scenarios that I had never seen until it was required of me. I can now more confidently approach numerous uncommon tasks. I have spent many hours being moved around with tasks and learning new ways of approaching tasks. Learning to install is important, but having the chance to learn how to learn has been greatly beneficial," continues Landon. Congratulations, Landon! At the School of Engineering here at the University of Birmingham we asked Level 7 Degree Apprentices #NAW2024 in #railwayengineering and #geotechnicalengineering about the #prosandcons of their DA experience so far. Q: What motivated or convinced you to enrol on a Degree Apprenticeship? A: Professional development leading to chartership. A: No tuition fees. I get paid to do a degree, instead of paying for it. A: My manager did this degree and found it valuable. Q: What would you say is the most useful aspect of your Degree Apprenticeship? A: The time off work that's granted to DAs makes the balance between study and work a lot easier. A: Getting practical experience and encountering real life engineering problems, not just theoretical. A: Frankly, I used to think [colleagues in other parts of the company] didn't know what they were talking about, but now that I had to learn what they do, I see that they sometimes have a point! Q: What is an advantage of attending the programme as a Degree Apprentice compared to other options? A: Guaranteed time off work to study. A: Easier pace, less pressure. A: Frequent meetings with the mentor. Q: What are the challenges of a Degree Apprenticeship? A: Academic writing, if you've been out of school for years! A: Research and writing for university isn't always similar to what I do at work. A: Some modules feel too easy if they're covering the field I work in, but the others make up for it.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, let's spotlight the remarkable journey of Kalum Downey, an HNC Year 2 student making strides at Kirkstall Precision Engineering. Kalum shares his insights on why an apprenticeship was the perfect launchpad for his engineering career. 1)    Was an apprenticeship right for you? I believe an apprenticeship was the correct path for myself as it allowed me to go right into my chosen career path and specialise in an area of engineering I favoured rather than choosing to get a university degree after my time at college. I also have gained more experience within working environments which is experience that is less attainable while getting a university degree. 2)    What is a proud moment for you during your apprenticeship? During my apprenticeship I was able to achieve a lot through my work, I was nominated and won first place for the future team leader award at the Leeds Manufacturing Festival in 2023.I was also proud to be nominated for a national award at the 2023 Engineering & Manufacturing Awards. I have also been fortunate enough to receive training for software’s such as SolidCAM and DREAM. 3)    What are you hopes for the future? I hope in the future I am able to progress further with my the new role I will be playing in production. Helping my department to become more efficient and improving the communication around workflow.
