There’s a new $5 meal deal on the block—but this one doesn’t involve a cutesy jingle or a footlong sandwich. McDonald’s rolls out its new value offering today, aiming to lure back cost-conscious customers who turned away from the chain amid increasing prices. The deal includes four items—a McChicken or McDouble, four-piece nuggets, small fries, and a small drink—but will only be available for a month. Why is Mickey D’s doing this? People aren’t flocking to the Golden Arches like they used to. McDonald’s missed sales expectations in Q1. It’s also battling a perception fueled by viral social media posts that the once-reliably affordable chain has gotten too expensive. McDonald’s is hoping the $5 meal deal will bring back customers. Coca-Cola contributed $4.6 million to subsidize the promotion after some franchisees said it would eat into their profits. Racing to the lowest price: McDonald’s may be the largest fast-food chain by sales volume, but it has competition tougher than a day-old fry. Key Observations: 💥 Panera Bread and Shake Shack tend to be the most expensive options for a typical lunch combo. 💥 Taco Bell, Trader Joe's, and Raising Cane's offer some of the most affordable lunch pricing. 💥 Burger/sandwich prices range from around $3.69 (Taco Bell) to $9.99 (Panera). 💥 Fries/sides are generally $1.95-$3.19 across most chains. 💥 Drink prices are typically $1.39-$2.95 for a medium/large. The total typical lunch price falls in the $7-$15 range for most major QSR chains, with grocery store delis like Kroger and Trader Joe's being more affordable options alongside value chains like Taco Bell and Raising Cane's. Fast casual chains like Panera and Shake Shack are on the higher end of the pricing spectrum.

I sat at a Chili's tonight for the first time in years and I must say I'm impressed with how they have righted their ship from the direction they have been headed for the past 10 years. Supply Chain: Here's a lesson in leveraging their buying power in the supply chain to provide a real value proposition ($10.99 for a full meal including drink and appetizer). Customer Experience: We arrived at 6:30 on a Friday night, the height of busy time for a restaurant, and were immediately seated. Lean Operations: As we were seated a server with a tablet takes the order, the drinks arrived within 30 seconds, appetizers were another 30 seconds, indicating a very lean and prepared back-of-house. The timing of order placement and an interval of 10 minutes to enjoy the appetizers was perfect. The food arrived just in time, was fresh/flavorful, and we had several visits from the server. ROI: Their efficient operations and table prep allowed for table turnovers several times an hour. This drives higher returns on their limited seating capacity and ultimately cashflow where 1 table would take an hour, now they could turn 2 or 3. High praise for the efficiency and efficacy of this visit, hoping for similar ones in the future.
