While the data is based on mostly estimation (and may or may not include freelancers and project hires) it is a rare treat to find such a summary on the more or less up to date state of VFX.
This is the shape of the VFX industry today. There's been a lot of change over the past two years, from peak demand for VFX (2022) to the Hollywood strikes (2023) and a slow recovery (2024-). It's easy to lose your bearings. This chart shows 150+ VFX studios from around the world. Color represents whether they've grown over the past 2 years (blue) or downsized (red). If you want to take a closer look, there's a "live" version of the chart -- with a few updates -- at the link below: https://lnkd.in/ga6zuEXk You can mouse over each bubble in the live chart to see the studio's name, the (approximate) number of employees, and (approximately) how much that's changed since June 2022. Feedback welcome. Is a studio missing from the list? Is the estimate of employees off the mark? I'll make the data as accurate as possible. #vfx #vfxindustry #vfxjobs

Amusing video for a variety of reasons: 1. The unironic complaint about a “sub-par” COCOMELON feature being greenlight, while simultaneously bemoaning layoffs. 2. The naive “shock” that layoffs are following a period of rapid hiring. (That’s generally how it works, folks.) 3. The xenophobic expectation that Americans should have preferred status as animation employees. (Why?) 4. The astonishment that corporate gains trump “creative integrity” at major studios. (Welcome to capitalism.) 5. The ignorant positioning of AI as a scapegoat. 6. The expectation that we have a “right to work”. 7. Misplaced faith in the power of unions. 8. The overall wage slave whine. 🙄 But one conclusion is on the money… SUPPORT INDIE CONTENT CREATION Indie animation is THRIVING worldwide! It’s an uncertain time to be a hired gun, but a REMARKABLE time to be an independent producer. https://lnkd.in/gW4x-EHY

Lead Artist Nvidia / aka "El Capitan", "The Wolf", or "RO" / Art Direction / Digital Specialist (Posts and opinions are not reflective of Nvidia these are my thoughts only)
This is still fresh it seems, so I am not sure it is true yet, but key news outlets are starting to post. Weta Digital is no more. Unity has closed doors on Weta Digital it seems. Edit:/ Seems it is Weta Digital which is the branch that got sold to Unity. The contract has been released and returned to Weta FX that is still owned by Peter Jackson. Weta FX is going to try to hire as many as possible from the 250+ layoffs unity had. All tools are also back to the hands of Weta FX. Not great but also hopefully this is more like a transition due to Unity trying to narrow down and focus. Who knows. /: Edit done :/ The studio that brought "The Lord of The Rings trilogy" that has advanced vfx and cg in general for all of us is now gone. I still remember when it was announced that "Life of Pi" did not make bank for the vfx studios and its employees even though it got vfx awards the year of release. Obviously, this is not sustainable. Now we have directors that lie constantly and reduce the efforts of vfx artists like Nolan and others. These types of people are the reason why vfx artists suffer. No excuse. With the writer strikes this year I see a possibility of a larger vfx strike building up. Probably come next year we will see this. I am still lucky to be stable, but I know many are not and it saddens me to see the industries I love suffer and crumble with also the hard-working people inside of these industries. Wishing everyone who has been affected luck in finding a job soon. Next year will be rough hang on everyone! #vfxindustry #vfxstrike #cgstrike

The Great VFX Ramp Up. In the shadow of the recent writer's strike, the #vfx industry faces a period of unprecedented uncertainty and challenge. Studios, from giants to smaller outfits, to even brand new companies inspired by the opportunity, are all bracing for what we're calling "The Great Ramp Up"—a period of production activity and rebuilding expected to follow the current stagnation. And it has been rough. Many studios expanded rapidly during the boom times, taking on considerable debt with the expectation of continuous growth. Now, faced with the reality of the strike's prolonged effects, these studios find themselves struggling to "pay the mortgage." The inevitable result has been a scaling back of teams—far more than many would have preferred—to maintain solvency. The other concern? Studios and VFX Producers worry that when production does resume, it will all start at once. Instead of overlapping shows at different stages of post, instead the risk is multiple projects overwhelming the early stages of production while leaving downstream departments idle, awaiting their turn in the production pipeline. When to hire? How long will the ramp-up last? What about training and leadership? In this video, we highlight how a fictitious VFX studio, VFX 'R Us, uses our tech to project out various award, schedule, staffing and capacity scenarios for the upcoming season of House of the Dragon, Stranger Things, and Orphan Black. The key to navigating this landscape lies in strategic planning and adaptability. Instead of looking at a single scenario, we give you the ability to look at dozens, if not hundreds, of possible "what if" outcomes and better plan and prepare you, your team, and your cash flow, for the inevitable surge. https://lnkd.in/gVhNKEnz
