Have you loved a small business lately? The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines small businesses as those with less than 20 employees. 97.3% of all Australian businesses or 2,520,419  were small businesses as of June 2023. And the vast majority (93%) of these businesses have a turnover of less than $2 million. There were 42,010 small businesses in Tasmania, representing 2% of Australian small businesses as of 30 June 2023. This is in proportion to the 2% of Australians living in Tasmania. I LOVE seeing statistics on Small Businesses in Australia. When we think of businesses we tend to think of the "big end of town" think large supermarkets or chain stores/franchises. But the reality is that it's small business that is the heartbeat of the Australian economy. This is especially true in regional areas. This link is to some very interesting 2024 statistics on Small Businesses. What I found fascinating is the proportion of micro-businesses - those with 1-4 employees - these make up a whopping 70%!!! Wow. I just discovered a fabulous resource for Canadian small business owners and those who serve them. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce published a A Portrait of Small Business in Canada in January 2024. The report says that traditionally small businesses are defined as entities with 1-99 paid employees. However, this broad category masks the varied experiences of: ✅ Micro-businesses (1-4 staff), ✅ Scale-businesses(5-19 staff) and ✅ Mature businesses (20-99 staff) The nuances of these business types are important. The authors state, "Microenterprises and small businesses make up the economy’s core, with microenterprises constituting 55.3% of all businesses. Add in businesses with up to 9 employees, and this number grows to an impressive 73.8%, highlighting the impact these smaller entities have on the economic landscape." 🍁 Most businesses in Canada have 1-9 paid employees! 98.8% OF AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES ARE CONSIDERED SMALL TO MEDIUM BUSINESSES SMALL BUSINESSES MAKE UP 57.2% OF THE AUSTRALIAN GDP MEDIUM BUSINESSES MAKE UP 17.3% Combined they make up 74.5% of Australia’s gross domestic product Small business employs over 4.7 million people and 41% of the business workforce, making it Australia's biggest employer. Medium businesses employ another 24% of Australians So again together they make up 65% of all jobs in Australia . Although this is the case, it seems like there isn’t a lot of support for small and medium business and often the government, while one might argue is trying to do what’s best for business and for Australian society overall, seems to put a lot of roadblocks in place that make it so much harder for businesses to be successful. Interesting report - it's fascinating to see that immigrant entrepreneurs own a disproportionate share of businesses, especially "micro businesses" with 1-4 employees. This trend is likely to continue as immigration targets rise. However, it appears that immigrant-owned businesses tend to remain "micro" and fewer of them scale up. The issue I've noticed is that the startup programs targeted at immigrants, which are funded by IRCC, are only available to "newcomers" with permanent resident or refugee status. This excludes immigrants who have obtained citizenship (which can take as little as three years). It typically takes immigrants 5-10 years to establish themselves and feel stable in Canada. By providing immigrant-centred support only to 'newcomers' (permanent residents and refugees), we are essentially guiding them towards starting businesses that mostly result in self-employment. I admire the success of immigrant entrepreneurs, but what if there were programs available for those beyond the PR/refugee status? What if those whose immigration journey has stabilized, perhaps they have become citizens, could access IRCC or other immigrant-targeted support to start their business journey? By restricting funding and programs to "newcomers," we are limiting the potential for scalable businesses created by immigrant entrepreneurs. Tatanisha Riggan Paola Gonzalez Sumyia Sheikh, MBA

I learned this term during the research of small businesses in Canada. It's a beautifully tragic term, the meaning is tragic. It is the net result of the appearance or disappearance of businesses over a given period of time. "Over the last five years (from 2015 to 2019), on average, 101,324 businesses were created every year and 90,151 disappeared." From 2001 through 2015 the number of small businesses went down overall. Less than 40% of small businesses survive 15 years. Each one of us has the power to help a small business survive, simply by choosing to shop local. #shoplocal #smallbusiness #saveoursmallbusinesses
