Our spatial modelling work package is central to many aspects of our project, building on the data we collect as well as existing data to create the best possible distribution maps for species, biotopes, and habitats. The models we develop will also cover human activities, pressures, and their impact, crucial information for our other work packages. We're focusing on identifying biodiversity hotspots in the Baltic, and to provide this information in a more detailed way. On this, we have been developing methods to downscale low-resolution raster data for better accuracy. #SpatialModelling #DataScience #BalticSea #MappingtheBaltic

"Meet Eco-index, a team of experts in ecology, data science, economics, and mathematical modeling tackling biodiversity decline with a heart and a head full of dreams for the future of Aotearoa, the indigenous Māori name for New Zealand. Initiated by the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge research program, the Eco-index team is set on a mission to develop geospatial solutions to solve the biodiversity crisis, and they are using a combination of Planet satellite data and artificial intelligence to do just that." #satellitedata #remotesensing #biodiversity #artificialintelligence

🌱 Advancing Biodiversity Monitoring with Metabarcoding 🧬 Metabarcoding is revolutionizing biodiversity monitoring by enabling rapid and comprehensive species identification from environmental samples. However, the patchy availability of high-quality reference sequences poses a significant challenge. To address this, collaborative efforts are underway to curate comprehensive genetic reference sequence databases. These efforts are crucial for enhancing species-level taxonomic resolution and accuracy in biodiversity assessments. By investing in the development of robust reference databases, we can unlock the full potential of metabarcoding for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. Let's work together to build a solid foundation for biodiversity monitoring in the digital age. #Metabarcoding #BiodiversityMonitoring #Conservation #Genomics #Collaboration

In our annual report for 2023, you can read more about our lessons learned and progress we have made. Since we started 11 years ago, we have achieved proof of concept in holistic landscape restoration using a practical and universal approach, the 4 Returns framework. It is encouraging to see more and more partners wanting to adopt this approach. I really do not like bad data, especially when it informs decisions and is seen as being reliable and standardised-when in reality it's not. So we decided that we would look into what informs the IUCN assessments, given that they are the main species indicator for the global biodiversity framework. We found a shocking lack of transparency on what data is included, and major disparity between the amount of information (publications) included, which was best explained by popularity.....furthermore, almost no evidence of empirical data-use, such as using GBIF to map ranges (which explains why the ranges compare poorly to point based data when assessed) https://lnkd.in/gft3WEy2
A dire need for better standards of data quality, transparency, and reproducibility in IUCN RedList assessments

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recently published the Species Abundance Indicator report for England. This indicator is explicitly designed to measure progress towards legally binding targets in the Environment Act 2021, of which halting and reversing biodiversity loss is just one element. UKCEH scientists are playing a key role designing the methodology and process behind the new species abundance indicator: Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gwFgPEJk #biodiversity #EnvironmentAct #SpeciesAbundance #ecology #BiodiversityLoss
