Türkiye receives its first floating natural gas production platform The energy minister said the platform will eventually enable the country to double its Black Sea gas production. “This facility will double our current output from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea,” Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated at a ceremony in the Aegean province of Çanakkale on Friday, as reported by a local media outlet.  Current production will be increased to ten million cubic metres per day (mcm/d) initially, then to 20mcm/d, which will meet the natural gas needs of an additional 4.4 million households through the platform, said the minister. The minister emphasised that this is not a ship but an industrial facility. According to Bayraktar, the “production base” measures 300m in length and 58m in width. Following its processes at the port in Çanakkale, a city in north-western Türkiye, the platform will move to Filyos next year, where it will operate for the next two decades off the northern coast. M2X Energy, founded by Bill Gates’s awarded $10 million in federal funding for modular that convert stranded gas from crude-oil-focused wells to “low-carbon” methanol in Bakkens. After removing impurities from the gas, which would otherwise be flared, the gas is run through an engine reformer to produce a synthetic gas, or syngas, which is then compressed and — with the assistance of a special catalyst — synthesized into methanol. M2X Energy said in a recent presentation that each modular unit will consume about 150 Mcf/d of stranded gas to produce 500 to 700 gallons of methanol daily, depending on the composition of the well gas. The first several units are being manufactured in Florida and North Carolina, with plans to begin commercial operation by the end of this year. The company anticipates a quick ramp-up and projects that its units in the Bakken and other shale plays will produce 1 million tons of methanol annually within 10 years (see Figure 1 below).

According to the annual natural gas report by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (#EMRA), #Türkiye's natural gas #production last year rose by 112.55% on an annual basis, reaching 807.28 million cubic meters.
