Compostable Packaging Trial Shows Significant Increase in Consumer Participation and Decreased Contamination - The Compostable Coalition UK, with advisory board members including M&S, Ocado and WWF, has reported a five-fold increase in consumers disposing of their compostable packaging in the food waste bin, in a first-of-its-kind consumer behaviour trial. In a six-week trial with residents in Medway, 120 households were informed that they could dispose of compostable packaging in their food and garden waste bin. The disposal of compostable packaging in the food and garden waste bin is not currently mandatory nationally, and advice varies between local authorities. Thanks Packaging Europe for highlighting our NEXTLOOPP project. the target is to provide a pathway for post consumer PP packaging back into food grade applications. PP is a very versatile plastic material and it converted into many pots, tubs, and trays as well as many films. Our group has had 53 organisations joining it and every week we make significant technical progress on the key goals of making food-grade compliant rPP and boosting the sorting of this widely used packaging. Over 45 industrial scale trials have been conducted by our participants providing real world feed back on the suitability of the PRISTINE (TM) recycled PP in their packaging products. The resins have no odour and are highly migration resistant due to the decontamination steps used in the recycling process. The participants in NEXTLOOPP have greatly enriched the programs through their participation and novel technologies that have evolved from the projects. New cleaning and decontamination processes, removable IMLs, high-speed high-precsion sorting, novel low cost markers, one pack resins with tailored rheology and techcnial properties have all emerged from the application and focus developed b the NEXTLOOPP team and its dedicated participants.
