We're thrilled to share the incredible achievements of #AustralianFoodPact Signatories working together to end food waste, as featured in the latest Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Landline episode - https://lnkd.in/gD25YEFS 🥦 In just one year, a collaboration between fruit and vegetable wholesaler Simon George & Sons, and food rescue organisation FareShare, has successfully diverted 20 tonnes of premium fresh produce, helping to create 50,000 nutritious meals for those facing hardship across Australia. The Australian Food Pact played a pivotal role in connecting these two organisations, facilitating site visits, arranging networking opportunities and providing expertise and insights. New research led by RMIT University for End Food Waste Australia has found making shorter menus could help small to medium sized cafes reduce food waste and save thousands of dollars. Difficulty finding time to plan and streamline menus and overproducing #food was a key driver of #waste and reduced profits. "Up to 60% of an average cafe’s bin is filled with food and we're not just talking about peels and stems – it’s also edible, quality food,” said lead researcher Professor Tania Lewis. "Fewer menu offerings make stock control easier, as does allowing ingredient substitution for meal components – like seasonal pesto, chutney or jams." Other recommendations from the report include buying aesthetically imperfect produce directly from farmers, reducing plate and portion size and encouraging customers to take home unfinished food. "Cafes have small profit margins, so they really stand to win in a big way by reducing waste,” Lewis said. Café culture and high-quality catering are daily delights in Australia, but did you know the hospitality industry tosses out the equivalent of 4.6 million meals every day? That’s enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground to the brim 1.5 times! End Food Waste Australia works to reduce food waste across the entire food chain, including in our vibrant hospitality industry. With rising ingredient costs, staff shortages and shrinking margins, there has never been a better time to shake things up in hospitality - for the planet and for profits. That’s why we’ve just launched the Catering and Cafe Sector Action Plans – packed with innovative strategies designed to help caterers and cafes integrate food waste reduction into their daily operations. Together, we can reshape how the hospitality sector thinks about food waste, and help businesses thrive in these challenging times. The 2024 Foodbank Australia Hunger Report revealed that nearly 2 million Australian households faced severe food insecurity in the past year. At End Food Waste Australia, we believe that fighting food waste is fighting food insecurity. No one should go hungry when perfectly edible food goes to waste. That's why we work with #AustralianFoodPact signatories across the supply chain, to enhance food donations while minimising food waste. Working with food rescue organisations such as Foodbank Australia, SecondBite, FareShare and OzHarvest enables us to keep edible food in the supply chain and get it to those who need it most. If you are seeking solutions to address food waste, we are here to help. We’re thrilled to announce that our National Consumer Behaviour Change Campaign, The Great Unwaste, which launched on September 29th, has already gained incredible positive media attention. It’s inspiring to see such strong support for reducing household food waste across the country. Our mission is clear: to offer practical, relatable solutions that empower everyday Australians to make a real impact. The response so far shows that we’re on the right track, and we can’t wait to see this campaign—and it’s grounded in research, evidence-based, positive, solutions-focused messaging—reach even more households. Together with industry, government, and the not-for-profit sector, we’re creating a united front to help Australians waste less and value more. This is just the beginning. Today is the UN International Awareness Day of Food Loss and Waste and this year we’re excited to be launching the nationwide movement to help households across the country to make simple changes that can have a big impact on reducing the amount they throw away, saving money and creating a more sustainable future for Australia. The Great Unwaste follows the completion of research by the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre into Australians' food waste habits, which commenced in 2021. Surprisingly, a third of all food waste in Australia is actually generated in homes – and over half of this food is edible! No one sets out to waste food, and our research shows that 76% of Australians are looking for ways to reduce food waste at home - so we’re here to help. Currently, Australian households throw out almost 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, and over half of the food wasted is edible - the equivalent of 7.7 million meals of perfectly good food every single day. This waste not only impacts our environment but also represents a significant financial cost, with the average Australian household spending around $2,500 annually on food that doesn't make it to the kitchen table. This highly anticipated campaign answers the call from industry, all levels of government, and the not-for-profit sector to have consistent, evidence-based, positive and solutions-focused messaging that allows everyone to be united in helping Australians to reduce food waste. The Great Unwaste will provide practical solutions for everyday Australians, with positive, easy and relatable messaging.
