Why your brand needs a hero product to survive A lesson from BrewDog. My first ever team meeting with James Watt, one week into my Brewdog career. He sits us new recruits down and tells us he wants Punk IPA to be bigger than Sierra Nevada Pale. Bigger than Brooklyn Lager. It will be our hero product and make up 80% of what we sell. To a room full of beer geeks obsessed with variety, this didn't sound very inspiring. But from a brand building perspective, it made total sense. It's the classic 80:20 rule. 🦸 All the best, most well known brands have their hero products. 🍺 Brewdog > Punk IPA 🥤 Pepsi > MAX 🍧 Ben & Jerry's > Cookie Dough Your heroes will pay your bills. Your heroes will dominate your marketing output. Your heroes will be the lead in every ranging discussion. Sure, keep things interesting with additional skus of course. Just be realistic. If you're not bored to tears of your hero product, you're not doing it right!

What's even more surprising is that my boyfriend has joined the craze! 😊 Curiosity led me to dig deeper into its origin, and it turns out these cups have been around for quite some time. Initially marketed towards men, a strategic shift by the new head of marketing opened up a whole new audience, and the results have been nothing short of historic – apparently, even worth a few brawls. I was underprepared. I was out and it was cold. Yesterday, I bought a coat… —— As it happens, I needed a new coat for the looming Scottish winter. So I decided I would buy one, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. There are plentiful shops around town: it’s Inverness… Kelly Tadd had mentioned that Blacks Outdoor Retail Limited may have a sale on. And I happened to be pretty close to it as the rain was coming on again. 5 minutes in the store, a quick glance around and Kelly was right. Roughly 1/3 of the ticket price. Nothing remotely fancy. It met the brief. What does this teach us about business and marketing? Reputation matters: in this case the likelihood of sufficient quality at a reasonable price - some would call that value for money. So does convenience: had I been closer to Mountain Warehouse that may have been sufficient to sway me. At Yatter, we encapsulate this strategy in a model: The Yatter Wheel. Content: to build reputation. Offers: to drive action. Conversion: to make buying as easy as possible. Maximising Value: to grow repeat custom, referral and advocacy. To be fair, Blacks could have maximised the value of my transaction by asking for my email address. That might have been enough to ensure I walk past the competition next time, too. Anyway, now you know more about our approach to scaling great businesses.
