🏃♂️ On September 28th, I took on Melissa’s Half Marathon in stunning Banff, with my ambitious goal of finishing in 1:40. After four months of training, I felt like I had this in the bag. My good friend Devon K. —a.k.a. human metronome—was there to keep my pace on point over the 21.1km.
But of course, in classic fashion, life threw a curveball—or rather, an elk. 🦌 Just 5 km in, the race came to a halt because a bull elk decided to make a surprise appearance on the course. Apparently, he didn’t get the memo that we were kind of in the middle of something. So there we were, stretching and waiting, while this guy took his sweet time sauntering by.
Three minutes later, we were back on track. Thanks to Devon’s pacing, my watch time still hit 1:39, even though the official bib time was 1:42. Not too shabby, considering the guest appearance!
Big shoutout to Melissa’s race organizers and the town of Banff (Banff & Lake Louise Tourism & Parks Canada) for putting on a fantastic event and for keeping things safe—even if it meant sharing the road with the locals (antlers and all).
Honestly, this whole experience reminded me of working on utility-scale solar and storage projects. Just like in a race, there’s always something unexpected—a regulatory change, supply chain hiccup, or maybe even a metaphorical elk—popping up to slow you down. But with the right preparation, a good team (thanks again, Devon), and the ability to adapt and be flexible, you’ll get back on course and hit those goals.
So, how do you adapt when life throws you a curveball (or an elk)? Let’s hear those stories! 🦌
