Politics aside, this video provides a great explanation on why simply moving cycling facilities to secondary streets in cities like Toronto isn’t always feasible. Key elements such as network connectivity, logical wayfinding and crossing of barriers are often considered when planning a city’s AT network, but have clearly been lost in the public discourse as of late. As professionals, we should strive to educate and inform through public consultation processes. Initial research by Cycling Citizens MK suggests only 23% of cycle journeys in Milton Keynes are by women.  Volunteer researchers simply counted cyclists using redways in the last 10 days of January and found 131 male and 32 female. Recent UK-wide research by Lime shows only 19% of female cyclists feel sale riding alone at night and 91% face barriers to cycling.  “It’s a justice issue,” says Jane Whild of Voices of Women in MK. “Women’s equal access to cycling must be designed into City plans.  To make progress, we must understand the barriers.” In partnership with Milton Keynes City Council, Jane has created a 3-minute online survey to do this, https://lnkd.in/eWST2cZG, and wants at least 1,000 MK residents, female and male, to complete it. One year into Wales’ implementation of the 20mph default speed limit, there’s a noticeable reduction in road casualties. GB-wide figures for 2023 showed only minor decreases, but in Wales, road casualties dropped by 23% in the first three months of 2024. According to provisional Welsh Government data, this significant decline is largely attributed to the lower speed limit. In the Netherlands, what we can see – cycling infrastructure – may distract us from what we cannot see: a history of organizing, coalition building, struggle and negotiation. In “Mobility Protests in the Netherlands of the 1970s,” Matthew Bruno, Henk-Jan Dekker, and Leticia Lindenberg Lemos question the dictum “If you build it, they will come.” They trace the Netherlands’ high cycling mode share (about 27 percent nationally) not to infrastructure but to social movements in the 1970s. People organized to stop a long decline in cycling, to reverse a rising death toll on streets and roads, and to make places where people can thrive. Bruno, Dekker and Lemos caution that the Netherlands’ example is far more than meets the eye. The history they tell confronts us with this challenge: If we come together, they will build it.
