This process is opposite to subtractive manufacturing, where an object is created by cutting away at a solid block of material until the final product is complete. Additive manufacturing first emerged in the 1980s and was used to develop prototypes. Over the years, the technology has evolved and is now being used to create functional products. Today, companies like Boeing and General Electric use additive manufacturing in their business processes.
