Open-space lands in Texas, including those under timber, ag, and wildlife valuations, play a crucial role in providing essential resources like clean water, clean air, food, and fiber production. Properties with a wildlife valuation contribute to the preservation of open spaces, lower property taxes, and enhance property aesthetics and value.

Today is #WorldWetlandsDay — a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of wetland habitats and their functionality. Wetland habitats perform many key functions that serve as an ecological powerhouse in the broader ecosystem. Examples of these wetland functions include: • 🌧 Flood control • 🏞 Surface water storage • 🌎 Toxicant, nutrient, and sediment retention and removal • 🏖 Bank and shoreline stabilization • 💧 Groundwater discharge/recharge • 🕊 Recreation (hunting, fishing, etc.) • 🌻 Habitat for a variety of general and sensitive plant/wildlife species • 🐟 Aquatic habitat and thermal cover for fish species Since 1977, some form of a “no net loss” wetlands policy has been in place in the U.S. that benefits the entire planet. Ensuring that these critical ecosystems remain intact and properly functioning will continue to benefit humanity for generations to come. In his personal story of preservation, wetland scientist Erik Nyquist shares how his love for stream and wetland restoration has and will continue to have a positive impact on his home state of Montana. 2024 marks 10 years since local voters confirmed their ongoing support for Midpen by passing Measure AA, a $300 million bond measure specific to Midpen that enabled work to begin on priority preservation, restoration, public access and agricultural projects in our community-supported Vision Plan. Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing the progress and projects that Measure AA has allowed Midpen to accomplish on your behalf during the last decade. Together, these projects help make our region a healthier, more climate change-resilient place for plants, animals and people. We’re kicking off this effort with a story about the purchase, made possible by Measure AA, of nearly 100 acres of redwood forest. Preserving this property as public open space has big benefits for coastal creeks and future trail connections, and narrows the gap to help physically join Midpen’s La Honda Creek and El Corte de Madera Creek open space preserves. A scheme to create a saltmarsh habitat more than 20 years ago is playing an important role today in protecting vital carbon stores. The "managed realignment" programme at Abbotts Hall, on the Blackwater Estuary near Colchester, saw old sea walls breached in five spots along a 3km (1.9 mile) stretch in 2002 to create nearly 50 hectares of saltmarsh and intertidal habitat. It’s estimated that every year the seabed and saltmarshes store around 13 million tonnes of carbon, it’s almost three times more than our terrestrial land forests. https://zurl.co/YmXY

Market-based incentives have conserved over 10 million U.S. acres over the last decade, which is twice the rate of conservation achieved via modern-day land trusts in the last 60 years. This is one small story of how we are working with landowners like Jeffery Coombs to make this work. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3uWONZG #naturebasedsolutions #forestcarbon #climatesolutions

The first ruling on the Victorian Critical Habitat determination is in. And the opportunity seems to be lost, for now. A dissapointing decision that went against the Scientific Advisory Committee. Its seems that the removal a potential threat of building a mountain trail bike near the stonefly habitat (ie leaving things exactly as they were) somehow contributes to its survival. Conversely, making of the critical habitat determination would give extra level of protection to ephemeral alpine trickles above 800m, to the wingless stonefly and multiple other (often not yet decribed) species from inapropriate development, impact from road grading, controlled burns, firebreak logging etc. https://lnkd.in/gNrbZRYA

Restoration efforts on the Riverby Ranch Mitigation Site in Fannin County, Texas have provided a safe haven for over 200 species of birds, including a variety of grassland species that are currently experiencing steep population declines such as Dickcissels, Bell’s Vireo, and Grasshopper Sparrows. One such species, the Northern Bobwhite, otherwise referred to as “quail” or “bobwhite”, occupies a particularly valuable ecological and economic niche in this region of Texas, acting as an umbrella species for grassland bird communities and as a popular game bird and important source of income for rural communities. In order to determine the efficacy of restoration efforts on the population of bobwhite quail on the ranch, annual spring call counts, as well as various other bird survey methods, have been implemented with this spring count call conducted in May of 2024. Public lands are more than just spaces—they're a vital part of our national identity and well-being, providing water, clean air, and recreation access. 🌲🌎 In a recent opinion piece, Bureau of Land Management Director Tracy Stone-Manning reflects on the importance of managing these lands: “Each and every American owns our public lands. They provide so much: wildlife habitat, clean water and energy, food and timber, solace and recreation, and more. Balancing these values is the job of the Bureau of Land Management, for both current and future generations.” https://lnkd.in/ejMwmm66 #ActNowForPublicLands

🌄 Restoring with Respect: The Rollover Approach at Longcliffe At Longcliffe, we're dedicated to more than just transforming landscapes. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is at the heart of our quarry restoration efforts. By adopting the 'Rollover' method, we’re proud to contribute to the evolving practices that blend ecological care with the natural beauty of the Derbyshire Dales' landscape. This innovative approach progressively restores quarry benches into gentle, rolling slopes that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. But it's not just about looks. The rollover slopes make the areas more accessible for biodiversity to flourish. Since debuting this method with our Aldwark quarry restoration in 2020, the benefits have been clear. The softer, more natural contours not only improve the visual impact of former quarry sites but also create rich habitats for wildlife. Field grasses, wildflowers, bats, stoats, voles, and kestrels are just a few examples of the resurgence of life in these restored areas. Our commitment to this approach is ongoing. This is more than a restoration technique; it's a commitment to Longcliffe's dedication to environmental stewardship and community values. With each rollover slope, we're not just giving back to the land; we're ensuring it thrives for decades to come. #Longcliffe #InnovationInRestoration #RolloverSlopes #SustainableQuarrying #BiodiversityBoost
