This is a fascinating look at the fundamentals behind the dramatic decline in the Butterfly population. Short answer: Neonicotinoids. Commonly used agriculture pesticides. Used for both commercial and consumer applications. Most countries have not banned it. But here's a glimmer of hope. In the USA, 11 states have recently banned the use of Neonicotinoids. ICRISAT and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) researchers evaluated the climate resilience of smallholder farmers across three dryland sub-regions in #Senegal: Louga, Kaffrine and Thies. A Composite Index of Climate Resilience (CICR) was developed to measure this resilience, assigning scores from -2 for the most vulnerable to +2 for the most resilient households. Biological control (or biocontrol) in reality is the introduction, augmentation or conservation of a single alien invasive species of insect or microorganism, for control of a single pest species of insect or a single species of pathogenic microorganism. Biocontrol is successful in the laboratory under one pest one predator condition. However, biocontrol always fails in the field, because in nature multiple pests and multiple natural enemies interact with each other in the food web or food pyramid. Therefore, alien invasive species never survive in the non-native environment. In contrary, Natural Control is always successful and a permanent nature based solution (NbS) for management of insect pests, diseases and weeds in agriculture.

Paper title: Vulnerability and resilience in the face of climate changes in Senegal's drylands: measurement at the household level and determinant assessment This paper examines smallholder farmers' resilience to climate change in Senegal's dryland regions, using a composite index of climate resilience (CICR). It finds that all households are vulnerable to climate change with varying levels from one region to another and Louga being the most vulnerable area. Factors such as age of household heads, access to climate-smart agricultural training and information, women's involvement in off-farm activities or home gardening, off-farm revenue, and transfer revenue significantly impact resilience.
