Green Hydrogen shore power trial launched at the Port of Leith A consortium of four Scottish renewable and maritime companies have been awarded a UK government Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom grant of over £535,000 to develop an innovative UK-first approach that will use clean, green hydrogen energy to reduce carbon emissions from vessels when berthed in port. Supported by Forth Ports Limited Ports, the highly innovative trial will see the large tugs operating out of The Port of Leith powered by green hydrogen when tied up. The green hydrogen will be produced from treated wastewater from a nearby water treatment works, without compromising local water supplies. The year-long trial, run by partners Forth Ports, Waterwhelm, Logan Energy Limited and PlusZero Ltd, will deliver a state-of-the-art demonstrator system for green hydrogen shore power which marine vessels can use when they are berthed, removing the need for the diesel-powered systems which are currently in use on some quaysides. The project draws together leading Scottish innovation and technology with sustainability expertise from the water, energy and transport sectors, and will be the first of its kind to be demonstrated at a UK port – leading the way for a circular economy approach to port decarbonisation across the country. https://lnkd.in/esz8EKDx #hydrogen

The Pacific Northwest Clean Hydrogen Hub is facing early challenges, including a stalled project in Washington and high electricity costs, but backers remain optimistic about the region’s potential as a leader in clean energy. Key components, such as fueling heavy-duty trucks and reducing emissions from an Oregon cement plant, are still moving forward despite these setbacks. Chris Green, president of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association, emphasizes that while the road may be bumpy, the long-term vision remains strong. The hub, supported by federal funding and a public-private partnership, aims to be a cornerstone in reducing emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors, with the potential for significant environmental and economic impact in the region. https://lnkd.in/ghHjQs5p #Energy #Hydrogen #IP #VC #Patents #Deeptech

🚀 The Egypt Green Hydrogen project is making significant strides toward becoming a leading producer of green hydrogen and ammonia for export to Europe. 🌱To better understand this project's potential, we recreated a "similar project" using Southern Lights' software and public information. It took me less than 20 min to produce a full prefeasibility report using Southern Lights. 🔋Check out the automatically generated report by Southern Lights here: https://lnkd.in/dxF-FMj4 Here's what we found: Achieving a LCOA below the off-take price (1000 eur/ton) requires extremely low energy costs and electrolysis CAPEX and there might be many ways to get there. To show the order of magnitude of the required cost level to get that LCOA, I had to consider energy costs around 20-25 EUR/MWh for solar and wind respectively and total overnight electrolysis CAPEX of around 1100 EUR/kW, which is significantly lower than typical rates in most markets. These are assumptions because as far as I know, there is no public data about the actual rates. I took the following references from public data from the news in Hydrogen Central (https://lnkd.in/dvvxx4MK ): 🔹 Selling Price of Ammonia: 1,000 EUR/ton. 🔹 Production LCOA: 800 EUR/ton 🔹 Transport LCOA: 200 EUR/ton 🔹 100MW PEM electrolyzer, 203MW wind, 70MW solar (with its locations) 🔹 Sales of electricity surplus allowed (accounted for around 20% of tot rev) 🔹Haber-Bosch plant, H2 storage and compression are amortized assets repurposed for green operation. With these data points plus a set of assumptions, I got to a total LCOA of 1000EUR/ton which, when accounting for extra revenue from electricity surplus, makes the project break even around year 15. 👉 Do you want to reproduce this assessment for your projects? Get a free consultation with our team to find out how Southern Lights can help you standardize and boost your portfolio https://lnkd.in/d7D8TffR 🌍 Further studies should account for precise costs and a more detailed breakdown of cost items, revenue streams and financial modeling to provide a more comprehensive financial analysis. This can easily be incorporated to Southern Lights to extend this preliminary check to a full feasibility study. www.southernlights.io #GreenHydrogen #ProjectAssessment #SouthernLights

I'm very pleased to announce that Waterwhelm has been successfully awarded funding for a project through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC). Waterwhelm will partner with Logan Energy, PlusZero and Targe Towing Limited to deliver a combined state-of-the-art demonstrator system at the Port of Leith for the production, storage, and utilisation of green hydrogen to supply green shore power. The project will be supported by Forth Ports who are partners of two leading freeports in the UK. The new system will be a world-first for efficient green hydrogen production by utilising state-of-the-art technologies and waste resources. The project will act as a precursor to the deployment of green hydrogen in shore power supply to large ships and vessels across UK ports. Addressing an important challenge in decarbonisation of the maritime sector. Waterwhelm’s breakthrough water re-use and desalination technology operates at significantly lower pressure, resulting in lower capital and maintenance cost. Powered by waste heat, our circular solution achieves a world-beating reduction in electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. Another successful outcome for the Waterwhelm team, and myself as project lead on the written proposal! This project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. CMDC4 is part of the Department’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, a £206m initiative focused on developing the technology necessary to decarbonise the UK domestic maritime sector. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled a $7 billion investment to establish seven Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) across the country. These hubs will facilitate the production, storage, and use of clean hydrogen, contributing significantly to meeting the nation's clean energy and climate objectives. By 2030, the H2Hubs are anticipated to collectively generate three million metric tons of hydrogen yearly, significantly cutting emissions in challenging-to-decarbonize sectors responsible for 30% of U.S. carbon emissions. The initiative will also diminish 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year, equivalent to the yearly emissions of 5.5 million gasoline-powered cars.

Another piece of the Net Zero jigsaw is in place! Last week the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Claire Coutinho, granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) for the HyNet Carbon Dioxide Pipeline - the infrastructure required to capture, transport and lock away carbon dioxide emissions from industry. Our planning experts have been involved with this DCO application since 2021. A Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, this 60.4km CO₂ pipeline will link HyNet’s hydrogen production plant in Ellesmere Port, and other industrial emitters of CO₂ in North West England and North Wales, to the Point of Ayr CO₂ processing facility in Talacre, Flintshire. From here CO₂ will be piped for safe storage in the depleted offshore oil and gas fields under Liverpool Bay in perpetuity. On behalf of Eni as the applicant, Axis worked in partnership with WSP in the UK to obtain planning permission for the Point of Ayr CO₂ processing facility. Congratulations to everyone who worked extremely hard on securing this consent, a low carbon energy innovation which will make a significant contribution to meeting the UK's Net Zero commitments.
