I am thrilled to be a featured guest speaker at the upcoming Mater Dei Early Childhood Education Conference, where we will explore the theme of 'Navigating an Early Childhood Early Intervention Program for Your Child.' This conference is thoughtfully curated to equip parents, carers, guardians, colleagues in Early Childhood Education centres, paediatricians, medical and Allied Health professionals, with the most up-to-date and valuable information to help them navigate the complexities of early childhood early intervention (ECEI) programs. I am honoured to be diving into the crucial topic of Assessments and provide answers to the question, 'Which Assessments Does My Child Need?' Assessments play a pivotal role in understanding a child's unique needs throughout their ECEI journey. These assessments not only provide clarity but also set the course for the next steps. However, this process can often be overwhelming for families, filled with complexities and challenges. This workshop will help to provide clarity for participants in understanding this varied landscape. During the session, I will cover key topics, including: What are the different assessments? Bayley-4, Griffiths 111, WPPSI-IV, ADOS-2, VABS Which Assessments will my child need? When? Why? Where? Who will be able to assess my child? What will be the cost? Can I use my child's NDIS funding to pay for these assessments? Do all education settings require the same assessments? How do I know which Assessments each Education setting requires? Have you considered which school 🏫 your child with Special Needs will attend 🤔 Did you know that planning for school should start at 3 years old for a child with Special Needs😳 Deciding 🧐on the right school for your child is often one of the biggest decisions that parents have to make about their child. The reason for this is that your child will spend most of their day for the next 13 years in school 🏫and the impact of the environment is huge on their development. The importance of the right school is even more crucial for a child with special needs. Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓 are experienced with the process of transition to school for children with special needs. Unfortunately many parents do not realise that finding the right school for a child with special needs is not simply rocking up for enrolment the year before at your local school. A child with Special Needs will often require a Developmental Assessment carried out by a Developmental Paediatrician 🤓and a team of Allied Health Professionals. This is the Child Development Unit in public hospitals. The waiting time for a Developmental Assessment can be 12-18 months. So a referral to the Child Development Unit should occur at the age of 2.5-3 years old. At the Developmental Assessment, Transition To School paperwork will then be commenced and the Department of Education will be notified of a child's needs for specific schooling supports. The Developmental Assessment will help determine if your child is best suited for a Special Needs School, Support Unit in Main Stream Schools or Support Classes in Main Stream Schools. The MetroHealth School Health Program (SHP) is celebrating 10 years of providing clinical services for students and their families. What started 10 years ago as a single clinic at Cleveland Metropolitan School District Mound STEM Elementary School has since become a national model for school-based health, providing clinical services for more than 4,800 students enrolled at more than 25 schools throughout Cuyahoga County.   Over the course of its 10-year history, the SHP team of providers, nurses, program assistants, drivers and community health workers have built relationships and earned trust, and the results have been extraordinary. Students who participate in the program:   - Have fewer Emergency Department visits. - Are 97% more likely to have completed a well-child exam. - Are more likely to be up to date on required school immunizations. - Show improvement in academic performance.   To learn more about the SHP, click here: https://lnkd.in/guCu2HE4

Perceived challenges of early childhood educators in promoting unstructured outdoor play Unstructured outdoor play has been recognized for its beneficial impacts on children’s healthy development; however, unfortunately, opportunities for children to engage in meaningful play are limited. Early learning and childcare centres can be essential settings for unstructured outdoor play, and educators can play a vital role in supporting children’s opportunities, yet they face numerous barriers. This research examines experiences and perceived challenges in promoting children’s unstructured outdoor play. Participants’ identified challenges were mapped on the ecological system and ranged from microsystem concerns (e.g. knowledge and skills) to mesosystem concerns (e.g. lack of shared understanding with parents and colleagues), exosystem concerns (e.g. licensing regulations) and macrosystem concerns (e.g. societal risk aversion). Early intervention is easier said than done. 😣 ➡️ In the past two weeks, I've had conversations with over five sets of parents who rightfully expressed concerns about their toddlers' speech and language delays to professionals such as health visitors, nursery teachers, and paediatricians. 😞 Sadly, they were told to wait until their child is 2.5 years old before a referral could even be considered. (And would probably have to endure a one-year waiting list once referred). ➡️ I fully comprehend the reasoning behind this advice. Our public services are under immense strain, struggling to keep up with the escalating demand, resulting in these ever-expanding waiting lists. ✅ That's precisely why I developed my parent coaching program, "Help Your Toddler Talk". ❓What is 'Help your toddler talk'? Screen time can often interfere with these precious moments, but they are key ingredients in your child's language development, social skills, and bonding. Embrace these opportunities for shared experiences. While screens can be helpful tools, balancing them with interactive activities can boost your child's growth: 1. Read stories together 2. Play imaginative games 3. Explore nature on foot or in a stroller 4. Get in the kitchen and create a snack together 5. Have dance parties! The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend no more than one hour of screen time for two- to four-year-old children, preferably educational content, viewed together with a parent.
