Recently, I have been asked to explain what the role of pediatricians and primary care is in screening for and addressing maternal post partum depression. Not only is this core to EPSDT standard guidelines but it is so because extensive research has detailed the important connection between maternal health ( inclusive of emotional and behavioral health ) and infant health and overall development. As we continue to advance medical-behavioral-social integration within our health care ecosystem what I appreciate most about this reflection is the acknowledgement of the dynamics the provider's emotional self regulation and awareness brings to interactions. This allows for true empathic inquiry and collaborative capacity building.
