Lots of buzz around Foxtrot shuttering in my feed. Plenty to unpack here. First off my heart goes out to the employees affected and the emerging brands that were bought into the idea of Foxtrot being a catapult for their businesses. I genuinely hope that everyone can survive the severity of this action. My 2 cents if anyone gives a $h!t. I was there a few years back with Freak Flag Organics chasing Foxtrot as an account. These cute, curated, retailers seem to be great marketing playgrounds for emerging brands to be 'discovered', harvest data, etc. While they can be beneficial, the juice often isn't worth the squeeze. What happened with Foxtrot is not surprising. The strictly emerging/sexy brand model at retail just isn't profitable, for anyone. I fear ego likely had a hand in this. Raise 100M and then expand way too fast, and geographically too thin (DC issues, brand building, etc) is just not fiscally feasible. Or responsible. Ego (possibly greed) drives this sort of behavior. It's apparent that big CPG brand slotting fees, marketing support, etc combined with own brand expansion are a sad necessity for the majority of retailers. Drizzle on unforeseen issues like gnarly inflation (bougie rent, cogs, etc), supply chain issues etc made it incredibly difficult for them to make it. Erewhon is another example of the OG 'cool kid' retailer diverting/avoiding losses by expanding private label offerings...in a BIG way. Sadly, they are likely going the way of Whole Foods Market. At the end of the day, this F-ing sucks. I wish nothing but the best for everyone that didn't see this coming. It's not easy. #cpg #retail #grocery #trendy #ebitda #cogs #profitability

This is the tip of an iceberg. Some famous brands are behind in payments up to 6 months. This is why we have asked for a higher deposit on jobs over a certain amount. Our material cost are up over 32% over the past two years. This increase must stop for all of us as a vendor and for Hotels and restaurants. Is there anyone out there that is experiencing the same thing?

Pretty good synopsis, I’d say erewhon is the outlier though. Really good balance of intentional growth and impressive unit economics, $175+m in 10 doors vs $130m across 33 for foxtrot. Also, master class in site selection and controlling the size of their footprint.

We are in Tik Tok generation right now in building brands. Something goes viral or is the cool kid for a moment, everyone tries it or wants it (great trial or initial stores counts….)…you rapidly expand (more store counts) but like anything….not everyone will love it and then repeat isn’t there and velocity is non-existent. And you burned too much cash on wave one but have nothing left to drive wave two. Strategic, methodical growth is still the way. If you have good products and good branding (I would argue many brands try to launch without having both…), place your items in the right retailers and drive them there. Build your tribe. Then slowly expand from there. Places like Foxtrot are/were great playgrounds for figuring out if you have a tribe at all. From what I’ve heard in the industry, most people will miss the partnership they offered vs store counts they had.

I’ve always wondered about these little stores like this. Because when you walk in, it’s like a CPG innovation playground but it’s simply that: if you don’t have diversity in brand and cost- you’re only serving those who care about those luxury nice to haves. And that’s a hard game to play in the world of grocery inflation that we live in (sadly).
