Through Horizons National's partnership with the Yale University Center for Emotional Intelligence, many Horizons teachers are trained with the tools to implement RULER, a systemic approach to SEL that aims to inform how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn, and families support students. RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, Regulating. If we want to make an impact on learning and attainment it is important to understand the impact of experiences (including trauma) on children's development, to feel confident to identify and meet developmental needs and understand which experiences children and young people need to meet developmental needs within a graduated approach. When this happens as a whole school approach, staff well being improves dramatically. Work to develop a #SEL culture that centers on child development, and then moves across the classroom, school, district, and community! #Humandevelopment is at the core of SEL and the science of human development needs to be better understood by educators who can then help to build a community culture. If I were in charge of education, especially continued education for educators, including administrators, I would develop a well sequenced, continued education curriculum focused on human development. It would be mandatory to complete within the first five years of the career in education. The obvious impact will be increased in student, academics, student behaviors, attendance, etc. Ultimately the well-being of all people in a community will benefit. Getting stuck in Alternative Provision... 😣   Many students in Alternative Provision (AP) face challenges that extend beyond the classroom - whether they are behavioural, emotional, or social. While AP is designed to be a short-term intervention, too often these learners become "stuck" and find it difficult to transition back to mainstream education. It’s understandable though - If a student has been thriving in a forest school or AP setting, why would they want to return to a traditional classroom where they previously had difficulties? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Every child’s needs are unique, and there are no easy answers. However, we’ve found that tailored tuition and mentoring offer the best chance for learners to successfully transition.
