Did you know about the unique Bilateral Agreements between certain Schengen countries and the US? 🇺🇸 They allow US tourists to extend their stay by an additional 90 days beyond the standard 90-day limit in the Schengen area! 🌍 Take France for example - they've got a Bilateral Agreement letting US citizens stay an extra 90 days. That's a total of 180 days to soak up the French charm! 🇫🇷 But remember, you've gotta head straight home after - no hopping around Europe to reset that Schengen clock! ⏰ Besides France, many other EU countries have similar agreements with the US including: And it's not just France! Other EU countries like Poland, Portugal, and Italy have similar deals in place. But here's the catch... 🤔 Many countries actually overlook the law's enforcement of the agreement due to its outdated nature. And in other cases, although the validity of certain laws is acknowledged, enforcement is left to the discretion of border control authorities. So, it's a bit of a gamble if you'll actually get those extra 90 days. Of course, an easier way to get around this 90-day Schengen limit is to just spend 90 days in a Non-Schengen area and then come back. You can go to Non-Schengen areas like the UK, Ireland, Turkey, Georgia, Cyprus, or African countries like Morocco or Egypt. Ready to take the plunge and explore Europe a little longer? The EU's new Entry-Exit System (EES) will launch on November 10, 2024, digitizing border controls for non-EU travelers, including UK citizens. This system will replace passport stamping with biometric checks like digital photos and fingerprints. The introduction of EES is a significant shift towards modernizing EU border processes, with the ETIAS travel authorization system set to follow in 2025. Clarification on impact of EES for outbound travel from UK. Contrary to media reports (e.g. the BBC this morning https://lnkd.in/ezND-fS4), not all travellers will need to register their details when EES is implemented travelling from the UK, only non-EU/EFTA nationals not resident in the Schengen Area. Registration on departure will take place at Port of Dover, Le Shuttle and Eurostar. EES start date is not yet confirmed but we understand current target date to be either 10 or 17 November. Romania and Bulgaria to enter the Schengen area. This means that in future 29 nations will be part of the intergovernmental project set up in 1985, which makes it possible to cross borders between member states without controls.
