Recycling of plastics: Cost-effective & innovative solutions to meet the industry’s challenges ♻ 💲 People all over the world are becoming more aware of sustainability and the need to protect the environment is growing. As a result, the demand for better recycling of plastics grows. A major challenge for recycling companies is processing the sheer variety of plastics. These range from household packaging to industrial products. Printed films and moist materials are especially problematic and often not very cost-effective. Working with Ocean Bottle has made me hyper conscious of the amount of plastic we buy and throw away every day. This statistic, only 4% of flexible plastic packaging is being recycled is shocking. 96% of flexible plastic packaging is sent to landfill or leaks into our oceans. It’s almost impossible to imagine. To help you visualise. Imagine every packet/ punnet of fruit bought around London (think Prêt, Sainsburys, Waitrose), with flexible plastic tops, being discarded into your local town square - only 4% being repurposed annually. As Robert Little says, change is possible but it requires systematic shifts in packaging design, collection infrastructure and technology. #plasticpollution 

AI Revolution in Recycling: Transforming Polypropylene Sorting! Project OMNI, a collaborative research program, is pioneering the use of AI and machine learning for sorting postconsumer polypropylene (PP) packaging. This groundbreaking approach aims to recycle PP back into food-contact applications without the need for package redesign. Feel the excitement and potential as AI technology promises to revolutionize the recycling of polypropylene, making it more efficient and effective. Innovative AI Sorting: Recycleye developed an AI model that successfully identifies and sorts food-grade PP material from waste, achieving a pick rate of 50% with over 95% purity. Efficient Decontamination: The sorted material undergoes decontamination in a semi-industrial pilot, using standard mechanical recycling technologies to produce clean, odorless recycled PP (rPP). Sustainable Packaging Solutions: TotalEnergies produced high-end packaging applications from the rPP, demonstrating the potential for circularity in PP packaging. No Package Redesign Needed: The AI-based approach offers an alternative to digital and physical marking solutions, which typically require changes to the entire packaging system. Future Implications: This project opens new markets for recycled plastics and changes the economics of recycling, supporting TotalEnergies' goal of reaching 1 million tons of circular polymers. Project OMNI's success in AI-powered sorting of PP is a significant advancement in recycling technology.
