Rural areas across the UK are often misunderstood by funders and policy makers as affluent places with no real deprivation or need, and that they are places that deserve little or significantly less investment. This stance overlooks the many hidden needs and inequities that exist in the countryside, leaving large swathes of the population disadvantaged simply because of where they live. More needs to be done to recognise and understand the intersectionality of the rural population and the marginalisation they face due to higher costs of living, lower wage employment opportunities and a lack of access to key services and connectivity. With many communities becoming more remote and facing a cycle of dormancy, exacerbated by business closures, service withdrawal and insufficient house building we believe that something needs to change. Plunkett UK advocates for the community ownership model as a way of addressing many of the challenges that currently exist in the countryside. To support this ambition however, we believe that there needs to be a comprehensive, cross-departmental rural strategy at the heart of Government. This is something we are pushing for along with other members of the Rural Coalition - [https://lnkd.in/e7kVbUMS]
📽️ “Many people think it's all about green and pleasant land when actually, in reality, there are many hidden needs that exist in rural areas.” Chris Cowcher, Plunkett UK’s Head of Policy and Communications, expresses our ask for the new Government to have a rural strategy, making sure that funding and support is in place to grow the rural community business network. #ruralcombiz

Today the NAC released a new report, Funding the Care of Urban Forested Natural Areas, that looks at how 21 cities in our #ForestsinCities network are funding their urban forests. Listen to two NAC staff members Sophie and Emily (Senior Managers in National Partnerships and External Affairs), discuss common challenges and obstacles, and highlight successful strategies to acquire funding for these natural areas. Together they answer the big questions—Why fund forests? What is their value to cities? What resources are available to sustain them? How can individuals take action? Two Post Tuesday! 📰 Growing up in a rural community, it was pretty normal to feel disconnected. Serving the farmers of my hometown is something that took me awhile to be proud of because I had always felt my personal and professional growth was stunted by a slower way of life with less progress on emerging technologies. Spectrum is now America's #1 rural internet provider, per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) National Broadband Map. Long before the Biden administration approved & passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Charter Communications pledged $5B in expanding high-speed internet access to rural and underserved communities across the country. Because of that foresight, we've won over 25% of federal grants to help expedite access to reliable broadband in the last few years. In Texas, Spectrum has pledged $1.5B to boost the Lone Star State's broadband and telecommunications infrastructure -- a 30% increase in funds already approved by voters in November 2023. With 100% of Charter Communications employees based in the U.S., we're your friends, your family members, and your neighbors. Our commitment is to make access to fast, reliable internet a reality for so many households like mine growing up, so that your small business, your education, your quality of life isn't impacted by antiquated technology or service. As always, super proud to work for Spectrum, the largest cable & internet brand in the country! #neverstopreaching
