Today, I had the privilege of moderating a truly transformative panel at the 2024 ABPI Congress. We had an amazing group of IP Ambassadors representing key IP organizations around the world (Mr. Edward Kwakwa - WIPO, Gonzalo Rovira - GLIPA, Martin Torres - ACPI, Agustina Fernandez Giambruno - AUDAPI, Fernanda Magalhães - ABPI , Luana Muniz de Barros - AIJA, Cristian Barros - ACHIPI. We delved deep into the intersection of sustainability and Intellectual Property. The insights shared were not just informative—they were a call to action. Intellectual Property is crucial to building a more sustainable world. It is critical to intentionally prioritize sustainability in everything we do. What resonated most with me is power of partnerships. When we bring together like-minded individuals and organizations, we create a synergy that leads to innovation and creativity beyond what we could achieve alone. This journey towards a sustainable future isn’t easy; it demands resilience and a steadfast commitment to our shared vision. The road may be long, but I believe we can reach our destination with unwavering determination and collective action. Let’s push forward, inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead. #Sustainability #Innovation #Creativity #ABPICongress #Partnerships #IntellectualProperty

Indeed a great forum to share best practices among World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, ABPI Associação Brasileira da Propriedade Intelectual, ACHIPI, AUDAPI, ACPI, IJA and GLIPA on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set by the United Nations. Edward Kwakwa gave a great introduction on how Intellectual property acts as a catalyst for innovation, protecting the rights of inventors while also encouraging a competitive environment. A couple of remarks that I want to share after the panel discussions: • Intellectual property fosters economic growth and addresses critical challenges outlined in the SDGs, such as combatting hunger, healthcare accessibility, gender equality, and establishing partnerships and collaboration. • Intellectual Property Rights step in as advocates, creating an environment that supports innovation and sustainable practices by encouraging inventors and creators to come up with solutions that fit right into the SDGs. • Patents protect inventions and, by that, contribute to leading innovation in many different fields connected to the SDGs, like agriculture and healthcare. • Intellectual Property is a key player, paving the way for a greener and more innovative world. • Patents and IP rights encourage researchers and innovators to find better ways to grow crops, invent new farming tools, and practice sustainable farming. These new technologies and practices will help in producing more food which will result in better food distribution as well. The safeguarding of these innovations ensures that we can meet the growing demand for food while minimizing environmental impact, fostering a more sustainable and resilient food system. It was a privilege to be part of a panel with distinguished speakers and moderated by my colleague Maria Fernanda Hurtado. Thanks to Agustina Fernandez Giambruno, Cristian Barros, Luana Muniz de Barros, Fernanda Magalhães, and Martin Torres. Special credits to Erika Diniz Silla Carvalho, and Gabriel Leonardos and team of ABPI Associação Brasileira da Propriedade Intelectual for organizing a terrific 44°International Congress on Intellectual Property!

🌍 Happy World IP Day! 🌱 Just attended an enlightening seminar by Patentstyret - Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO) on Sustainable and Responsible IP Strategy. It's fascinating to see how the realms of commerce and sustainability intersect, yet often clash. But, is this conflict truly inevitable? For entrepreneurs striving to make a meaningful impact, scaling up becomes imperative. This involves securing investments, forging partnerships, and navigating competitive markets. Here's where Intellectual Property (IP) emerges as a crucial tool for success. Does that mean that they are immediately not responsible anymore? For larger corporations beholden to shareholders, one would think that profitability and sustainability are automatically at odds, but that is wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Dr. Pratheeba Vimalnath who articulated this beautifully today. Her insights underscored the importance of adopting responsible IP strategies to foster sustainability. I highly recommend exploring https://lnkd.in/dwdURs-s for valuable research on IP models tailored for accelerating the sustainability transition. IP is not merely a means of monopolization; it's a versatile tool. As illustrated in Dr. Vimalnath's presentation and in the picture below (from her 2022 article https://lnkd.in/dtwHRd9x), a balanced IP strategy can drive innovation and profits (Closed IP model) in some parts of the world, while promoting equitable access (Open ip model, e.g. royalty-free licensing) to technology in other parts of the world. There is a wide range of possibilities to consider! Excited to see the paradigm shift towards responsible IP practices! Perhaps we should register the WIPO "Ambassadors' Retreat" as a new trademark? Today was the third year that our DG Daren Tang invited the most senior diplomatic representatives in Geneva to come together and discuss our shared aspirations for innovation in the coming year. Ten years ago, I started attending WIPO's meetings for Ambassadors. At the time, it was a small group of countries, talking about a limited set of issues. The dividing lines were clear: those that supported IP; and those that felt it was holding back their development. I delivered my speaking points faithfully. Most Member States were not even in the room. A decade later, the level of engagement has transformed. Over 120 representatives joined our discussions, from across WIPO's diverse membership. But the bigger room was not the main story. Across regions and across levels of development, the overwhelming message was for more support for balanced and effective IP systems. IP has moved into the mainstream. Across the diplomatic spectrum, there was recognition that IP needed to strike the right balance and deliver for the whole of society, and WIPO's support to innovators and creators underpinned this. IP is no longer seen as a means in itself, but as a tool to unleash innovative and creative potential, including from small and medium-sized enterprises, indigenous communities, women-owned businesses, and entrepreneurs with disabilities. We may not need to trademark it, but I'm already looking forward to next year's retreat! #IP #innovation #creativity #development #unitednations #WIPO Photo: World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO/Berrod
