“People didn’t want to report to a woman manager” - said Neetu Kashiramka (MD, VIP Industries Limited) when I interviewed her for the upcoming 1000 Women Leaders Programs. Coming from a Marwari family, Neetu started her career as a CA and today she is the MD at VIP Industries! Spearheading an IPO at the age of 32, winning the CA Young Corporate Leader Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants, becoming a CFO, and then Managing Director at India's largest luggage manufacturing company, her corporate journey has been a sequence of challenges and exciting opportunities. On the surface, it seemed smooth sailing, but it didn’t come without obstacles! When she started in a leadership role people didn’t want to report to her, simply because she was a woman. To navigate this Neetu always fell back to her superpower of self-belief. “If you do not believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you!” She worked hard to make her team realize that she was actually adding value to their career. “Now there is no man who has an issue with reporting to me :)” Sometimes the biggest obstacle to your growth is not what the outside world is doing, rather it’s your own self belief. Like Neetu, developing the superpower of self-belief itself can take you a long way! It also draws insights on the best practices adopted by leading organizations to promote women leaders. A study from Deloitte in 2021 stated that only 3.9% of C-Suites in India were women. Despite their efforts to prove their skills and capabilities, the representation of women in leadership remains low due to existing glass ceilings. However, here’s why I believe we need more of them in top positions👇 📍For a long time, the agentic leadership style has been dominant and has often been linked to traditional male leadership. However, this limited view fails to recognise the immense value that communal leadership brings to the table. 📍On the other hand, communal leadership, often associated with female leaders, embraces empathy, collaboration, and relationships as essential elements of effective leadership. It recognises that creating a supportive and inclusive work environment fosters innovation, creativity, and ultimately, success. However, the ever-changing dynamics of businesses require a blend of both agentic and communal styles of leadership. By including more women in leadership positions, we can tap into the power of both agentic and communal leadership styles, bringing balance and diversity to decision-making processes. 👉It's time to break free from the limitations of traditional leadership and create a new narrative that embraces the strengths of both agentic and communal leadership styles. In 2020, I was told that I didn’t have the Business Acumen to become a Leader at work. 2 Years later... I became a Director in the world’s largest global audit firm 🤯 This year, more than 23 women have paid me thousands of dollars to help them get senior leadership promotions 🖤 This is what you don’t see from this highlight Reel: I was willing to ask for a promotion and NOT get it... I was willing to make a fool of myself trying to be better at my executive presence... I was willing to choke over my words until I became good at articulating my opinion to people who had more years of experience than my age... You see… the belief I had about my leadership was not dependent on what others thought of me… or whether they thought I was ready 🔥 My leadership was inevitable… And I moved from the vision of WHO I know I was… Not what others said I could be 🌶 There were plenty of times when it made sense to quit…and to try something else. 🌟I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable opportunity to participate in the CALD Women in Leadership conference as a representative of ANU College of Business and Economics MBIS student with Alo - Enlightened Women. The event was a true eye-opener, shedding light on the crucial issues faced by women in the workplace, especially within the dynamic IT industry. The panel discussion, offering attendees the chance to share their personal narratives. Inspired by the eloquent speeches from incredible CALD women leaders Xiaoyan Lu ,Hala Batainah ,Nu Nu Win , Dr Lubna Alam , Safiya Okai-Ugbaje, PhD Kishwar Rahman GAICD, and Faye Liu. I felt empowered to share my own journey – one of embarking on a new life in Australia. By reframing failures as opportunities for growth, I gleaned how to transform setbacks into catalysts for success, which is what CBE has been teaching me. During the enlightening "Activating the Growth Mindset for Leadership" workshop with Jas Kaur, we delved into cultivating a growth mindset. The sessions encouraged us to openly acknowledge our limitations and reframe them as positive. This shift in perspective can be a potent tool for personal development, equipping us to tackle challenges with renewed determination. Once again, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for this enriching opportunity and the encouragement to contribute to the empowerment of women in the IT industry. I eagerly anticipate future events that will continue to cultivate positive change and foster growth.
