🚨 UPDATE: VOTE POSTPONED
--------
🌍✨ Big day for sustainability and human rights: the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive vote ✨🌍
Today marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards a more sustainable and ethical business landscape. As business leaders, we stand at the brink of a significant decision by EU Member States that will shape the future of corporate accountability and responsibility. 🚀
🔍 Why 9th February matters?
In Brussels today, the Council of the European Union meets at the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) to decide the fate of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), a key vote for the adoption of the Directive (pending only a vote on the text by the European Parliament and a final vote in a few months in plenary). This directive mandates crucial human rights and environmental due diligence for companies, a crucial step towards fostering transparency and accountability in global value chains. 🔄
🔵 The urgency of action
Despite the tireless efforts to reach a consensus, recent developments hint at potential setbacks. The German Government's last-minute hesitation threatens to stall progress. However, the significance of today cannot be overstated. We must rally together to ensure the adoption of the CSDDD, transcending national boundaries for a shared commitment to sustainability and human rights. 💪
🌟 What's at stake?
The CSDDD holds the potential to be a changemaker in the way businesses operate, embedding ethical considerations into their core practices. By embracing mandatory due diligence, companies can mitigate risks, enhance transparency, and provide access to remedy, ultimately contributing positively to society and the environment. It also addresses gaps in #HREDD regulation across the EU as some countries such as Germany, Norway and France already have their own laws in place. 🌱
🚀 What comes next?
The decision made today will echo far beyond the confines of Brussels. If approved, the CSDDD will pave the way for a new era of responsible business conduct, affecting EU and non-EU companies operating in the market as well as suppliers, business partners, and workers. However, failure to seize this opportunity risks derailing progress and jeopardising our mammoth collective efforts - across government, business, and civil society - towards more accountability for environmental and human rights abuses across global value chains. It will hinder the requirement for effective due diligence to safeguard the most vulnerable in our globalised economy as part of the just transition and, therefore, the possibility of a more sustainable future. 🌏
I'm staying optimistic for the approval of the CSDDD. It would be a huge step towards a future where business can thrive in harmony with people and the planet, in a more responsible, fair, just and transparent manner. 💼✨
