Rejvi and Ahelam met a few weeks ago while volunteering at the Summer in the Square event at Aberfeldy. The two women are both from Bangladesh – and bonded over their experience of coming to a new country and establishing new roots. They both attended a volunteering fair hosted by the Volunteer Centre Tower Hamlets. They hoped to build their confidence and communication skills. “It was so fun,” Rejvi said. “I made a new friend and I got a break from my baby and my husband. I’m always looking for jobs and not hearing anything back – so I felt happy to do something that will help me with new skills and that can build my confidence.” This month it is South Asian Heritage Month. We are celebrating the amazing people from the south Asian community who make Poplar and Bow such an incredible place to live and work. Our volunteers, like Ahelam and Rejvi, are a big part of that. At our volunteer leader network meeting last week, we had a conversation with Ricki Spencer, Health and Community Sociologist and member of Volunteering Victoria’s First Nations Peoples of Victoria Advisory Group, about how volunteer involving organisations can respectfully engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and create more inclusive volunteering opportunities. Ricki highlighted that supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within volunteer programs is a diverse and multifaceted responsibility, as every individual carries unique identities and stories. Key steps for fostering inclusion include: 🤝 Prioritise cultural safety and a safe journey for volunteers. 🔥 Incorporate Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners into meetings. Recognise and understand the traditional lands where volunteering occurs. 🌿 Display an Indigenous plant (Welcome Plant) in your office as a symbol of welcome and connection to the land. 🪶 Create an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage can be shared comfortably, without pressure. 🤲 Meet with Elders to guide inclusivity efforts. 🌏 Build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to foster mutual understanding. 📜 Implement a Reconciliation Action Plan or Strategy to embed cultural change within your organisation. 🎨 Incorporate cultural representation through art and poetry and use creativity as a way to engage. 🌟 Champion and spotlight volunteers to celebrate their contributions. #culturalsafety #inclusivevolunteering #ReconciliationActionPlan #RespectfulEngagement

Volunteering Lead @ WCVA • Youth Volunteering Specialist • Youth Leadership • Network Lead • Trustee • Mentor and Coach @Felicitie_Walls
Dear network… I’ve made a pledge to undertake 40 volunteering experiences before I reach my 40th birthday (in September 2024). The search for meaningful, impactful and enjoyable opportunities has been going well and I’m already committed to at least 10 volunteering activities or roles. Some of these are completed and others are just getting started! (I’m not immune to the delay in the volunteer recruitment process). One of the aspects that has been of key importance is that I would like to build relationships with organisations, that may well go beyond the volunteering I undertake for this challenge. In the main the opportunities I have committed to are those that will see a regular commitment over the next 12 months and most likely beyond. However, in order to reach the 40 experiences, and in honouring my time as a mum to a 2yr old & 6 month old, I am keen to identify some micro and/or family welcome/family friendly opportunities that I can take part in. Please let me know if your organisation, or an organisation you know has something that might be suitable. As you will see from my profile I have experience in the world of volunteering, health & nutrition & youth work & participation. But also willing to turn my hands or mind to something new. Let me know what you’ve got! #40to40challenge #Volunteering #FamilyVolunteering #MicroVolunteering #Opportunities

What can you do as a volunteer? The question is, what do you want to get out of the experience? At RMC, we will look at what you want to gain, what opportunities we have and see what matches up. This could be anything from advising, translating, providing admin support and a whole lot more. Have a look how it all works on our volunteering page: https://lnkd.in/e-K-7_38 #VolunteersWeek #Volunteering

Today marks the end of my journey with Fundacja Centrum Aktywności Twórczej (Fundacja CAT) in Leszno, Poland. I’ve just completed my two-month European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteering program. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding experience, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished during this time. I look forward to sharing more about my journey and the lessons I’ve learned in the coming days. #ESC #EuropeanSolidarityCorps #Volunteering #EU #EuropeanUnion
