Forestry South Africa (FSA) reports that there are over 25,000 small-scale timber growers, with the majority being subsistence farmers supported by forestry cooperatives and social development initiatives of large corporations. The commercial tree species include eucalyptus, wattle, and pine and are selected based on market demand and timber end-use. Small-scale timber farming occurs mainly in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Eastern Cape. https://lnkd.in/dgW6fSRX

🚨 Did you know that illegal logging can account for up to 90% of forestry activities in key tropical forest regions? Maintaining traceability is vital in mitigating legality risks. Timber composite products, such as plywood boards, often contain layers from various tree species, sourced from different forest concessions and even different countries. Ensuring traceability for each element throughout the supply chain, documented before mixing, is essential. If full traceability cannot be achieved, timber importers should opt to gain more information from tools like the Timber Sourcing Hub by Preferred by Nature, where importers can identify high-risk areas in timber sourcing. Learn more about ESG risks in the tropical forestry sector and strategies to mitigate them in modules 2 and 3 of our new training video. Founder and Managing Director at SFM | Future-Focused Natural Asset Management and Plantation Carbon Project Development
Happy National Forestry Day! 🌲🌍 Today, I want to acknowledge the significant role that forestry plays in our environment, economy, and communities. 🌳 Working in this industry continually highlights the importance of balancing sustainable resource management with the need to address climate change. 🌱 This year, I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished at SFM, where we’ve planted or replanted nearly 2,000 hectares or more than 2 Million seedlings across southern Australia. 🌿 These trees are essential for capturing carbon and contributing to the future supply of fibre, ensuring that our industry remains sustainable and beneficial to the environment. 🌾 Forestry is about more than managing trees; it’s about supporting ecosystems, contributing to economic growth, and promoting sustainability. 🌍 On this National Forestry Day, I’m recognizing the efforts and dedication of everyone involved in this important work. 🙌 Here’s to the future of forestry! 🌱🌲 #NationalForestryDay #Sustainability #Forestry #CarbonSequestration #EnvironmentalStewardship #sfm #carbonoffsets

Encouraging to see Fergus Ewing MSP’s recent article in The Times, highlighting the importance of commercial afforestation in Scotland and dispelling some myths that often surround the industry. The article discusses how domestic afforestation provides an opportunity to reduce timber imports and increase carbon sequestration, all whilst providing a local supply of responsibly-produced materials for new housing and other uses. Not only that, but the commercial forestry industry turns over upwards of £1bn a year and supports over 2,000 skilled and semi-skilled jobs, all of which rely on a source of accessible, local timber.
