In 1939, General Motors presented the first model of a self-driving car at the World's Fair. The car was powered by electricity and guided by radio-controlled electromagnetic fields, which were transmitted through metal spikes embedded in the road. This concept was turned into a reality in 1958, with the addition of sensors that could detect the current flowing through a wire in the road and manipulate the steering wheel accordingly. During the peak of the space race in 1961, researchers started considering ways to successfully land vehicles on the moon. This led James Adams to develop the Stanford Cart, which was equipped with cameras and programmed to independently identify and track a line on the ground. This marked the inception of camera usage in self-driving vehicles, which is now an essential feature in autonomous cars. Following this breakthrough, the Japanese further refined this concept in 1977 by designing a camera system that transmitted information to a computer for image processing of the road. This paved the way for the first ever testing of a self-driving passenger vehicle, capable of attaining speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. #generalmoters #selfdrivingcar #model

Today, I’ll get back to some information gathered from the 9th Automotive Electronics and Sensor Summit. Here is a small snip-it of what I learned from the presentation titled “Software defined connected and autonomous cars” by VINFAST . A quick note, Vinfast is a Vietnamese car maker founded in 2017 that has made significant strides in a short period of time. It’s one of the new entrants all are watching and trying to determine its longevity. I found the recent presentation interesting and overwhelming, all in a good way. The presentation contents fall in line with my daily discussions, explaining how vehicle architecture will change the electronics used in vehicles and why. Just today, I was asked why we don’t jump from ECUs directly to zonal and skip domain control? In short, the technology is not ready. We just aren’t there yet. It will take a more innovation and design changes to reach the increased levels of autonomy and user experience that car makers are striving for. Plato Pathrose presentation started with this statement “Software is vital in the new generation of systems and vehicles.” Vital means absolutely necessary or important, essential. Strong word choice but non inaccurate. Eventually, all vehicles on the road will be mobile computers with more electronics content than ever before. Vehicles will become a system of systems. I have to say, I research this everyday but seeing all the required systems on one slide made it feel more overwhelming. For ADAS alone ▸Sensor system ▸Perception system ▸Route planning system ▸Computing system ▸Control system ▸Driver monitoring system ▸Parking system In addition there were 5 other columns which contained; vehicle driving, vehicle body, Driver cockpit, Data storage and management, power system. Each column has a minimum of 8 systems to consider.  Can you imagine the complexity of making this a reality in one vehicle? Camera solution under independent ASA standard for automated driving! We have created the first 8MP automotive camera communicating via the independent ASA Motion Link (ASA-ML) standard, based on the small formfactor of our satellite cameras already in series production.
