The company announced to reduce 3% of its workforce which is 80 in number. Key Reasons to restructure: One of the reason seen is the Start up has managed to decrease its net loss by over 38% to INR 528.5 Cr in FY23 from INR 855.6 Cr due to a reduction in cash burn. Licious comprised about 650 corporate staff and 2,400 people across production and supply chain functions. Competititors to Licious are FreshtoHome, Captain Fresh, Zapp Fresh, and TenderCuts and one of the reason to come up with profitability. Confirming the development to Inc42, a Licious spokesperson said, “We as a brand, see significant scope in expanding the number of targeted households to further fuel the consumer transition from traditional markets to contemporary purchase formats. We are reprioritising our cost outlays, considering the new growth levers. In doing this, it is unfortunate that we have to separate with some employees who have been a part of our journey.” Licious entered the coveted unicorn club in 2022 after bagging $52 Mn in its Series G funding. The company raised $150 Mn in March last year in a funding round led by Amansa Capital. Following this fundraise, the D2C brand forayed into the plant-based meat market by launching UnCrave. #Startup #Employees #Restructuring #Profitability #Investments #Fundraising #Workforce #foodandbevarages #consumers #restructuringjobs #jobcuts Licious (Image courtesy: rockwellautomation)

Sometimes you just have to get your hands dirty again to remind you of how far you’ve come, when you see your products on Woolworths shelves and kicking arse with sales.. Mrs Toddy's Tonic had a bit of an issue with the labels on our first order for China that needed relabeling by hand and then repack 10,000 bottles. We were informed by our distributor yesterday that they needed to be at the port today at 6.30 pm!! Instead of taking the much more expensive but easier route and eating the profits, we decided to hire a couple of Uni students looking for work and also put back on our hard labour outfit and jumped back into the trenches to help out. Today was a good reminder of how hard we worked when we started out Mrs Toddy’s, brewing in pots in our kitchen and the dining room becoming a sweat shop for labeling and packaging with our kids. They ran a sub 4 minute mile when we mentioned them helping today and cant really blame them! Sophie and I arrived home tonight and collapsed onto the couch, looking at each other and at the same time both going F#$%k that was hard work. This is what makes great and authentic brands, when even the CEO is prepared to roll up her sleeves to save costs and goes, let’s do this! That takes grit, and can only be learnt by the founder or CEO understanding that building resilience, is seeing challenges as opportunities. We like to believe the DNA of a brand is still a big part of the legacy from the founders and ours was there today in all its glory. #brandvalue #foundersrock #realingredients #authenticbrand #avalonbeach #northernbeaches #sydney #startups #founders

Foxtrot's demise needs to be put in some essential context. Grocery-heavy retail is NOT a profitable business model. Unless you have the power of Whole Foods' super-premium perimeter fresh departments (this is where Whole Foods has always made its money). At its peak, WFM only netted 7-8%. That was about three times the current profitability of supermarket chains (per FMI's data). Yet, Foxtrot was a hybrid of a convenience store, a specialty grocer, and a cafe. This was a labor-intensive mix for a small footprint—lots of labor per square foot. In-house delivery only made this more labor-intensive. According to data released in Modern Retail, I can infer that Foxtrot was selling ~$4M per location by the end of 2023, almost twice the revenue productivity of the average convenience store in the U.S. (per Statista). Revenue and traffic were NOT the problem here, it seems. Demand was strong. Early 'gossip' suggests that the new BigCo CEO installed by private equity was making strange decisions that diluted the focus of the store experience and merchandising mix. Not clear as of yet. I also think that the debt became too expensive to maintain and fund...and the sudden, disorderly nature of the bankruptcy suggests that investors simply wanted money back to redeploy elsewhere. In other words, it's possible there was no wildly unusual P&L problem, given how tight retail net margins are. ...give investors control, and they may vote to do something unexpected. Also, Foxtrot's demise reminds Phase 1 startups not to have 25% or more of their revenue coming from a 'new' retail concept. If you launch somewhere like this, grow beyond your dependence on it. #business #startups #entrepreneurship
