In a 2023 nationwide survey of of 296 district officials, 284 principals, and 478 teachers, a concerningly large percentage of the group described the buildings they work in as too small, outdated, toxic, unconducive to instruction, and ill-equipped for students’ rapidly evolving and growing needs. There is great demand amongst our nation's educators and administrators for upgraded infrastructure, but the widespread issue over the lack of funding persists. When they are uncomfortable, teaching becomes more difficult and the learning environment for children everywhere is negatively impacted. Although this article was based on schools in Mississippi, this seems to be an epidemic everywhere. I believe this was an issue pre-pandemic and heightened after the pandemic. What are the solutions for increasing the attendance rates to ensure that students are successful in their postsecondary opportunities? It is time to take these conversations a lot more seriously as this impacts a whole generation.
Mississippi Today published an article on the national trend of absenteeism impacting Mississippi schools. Pre-pandemic, ReImagine Prep had some of the lowest absenteeism rates in the state, but post-pandemic has had some of the highest.
