  • School Speech Pathologists play an important role in creating bright lives and positive futures for Tasmanian students and their families. For Maddy the most rewarding part of her job is when she can see change - big or small. “Sometimes progress can be slow, but when a student can start to say some sounds that you’ve been working on for so long, that’s amazing. Or when I can see progress with their reading, and their understanding and comprehension of language. Or even when I can see a student’s self-confidence increase, I find that really rewarding. Any sort of change, even if it’s really small, that’s exciting for me.” Read Maddy’s full chat with Careerify here: https://lnkd.in/g4sQRKCU #Careerify #BrightLivesPositiveFutures

    • Text reads: "I absolutely love my job.
My main role as a speech pathologist is to help students access the school curriculum to the best of their ability. One day I can be doing one-on-one work with students who have severe speech and sound challenges. On another day,
I can be doing class work at
a school...” - Maddy Polegai, School Speech Pathologist.
  • DECYP shone brightly at the recent Tasmanian Training Awards! We're proud that two of our students and one of our teachers received awards for their hard work and commitment to Vocational Learning. ⭐ Aleira (Hobart City High School Big Picture) received the 'School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year' award for her work and training with the state government’s Legislative Council. As part of her apprenticeship, she is completing her Certificate IV in Business. With outstanding leadership and a passion for social justice, we can expect to be hearing more from Aleira for years to come. ⭐ Renee (Don College) an Early Childhood Education and Care VET teacher at Don College, was awarded 'VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year'. Her commitment to delivering exceptional training for her students has seen her transform Don College’s playgroup into a fully operational childcare centre. ⭐ Connor (Elizabeth College) received the 'VET in Schools Student of the Year' award for his Certificate II in Tourism studies at Elizabeth College. Connor has already been able to use the knowledge from his studies in his part-time job, and plans on using his new skills for his future pathway in the outdoor tourism sector. Aleira, Connor, and Renee will represent Tasmania (and DECYP!) at the national awards in December. #BrightLivesPositiveFutures

  • Educators from primary and secondary schools across Australia were honoured this week at the 2024 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards, presented by Australian Schools Plus. Everyday educators in our public education system make a transformative impact in their schools and community. Two of our outstanding educators have been recognised in this year's awards. Georgia Park from Cosgrove High School and Josh Salter from Burnie High School were among 12 teachers recognised across the country with 2024 Teaching Fellowships. We are very proud of you. • Supporting positive school attendance is a shared responsibility – everyone has a role! Earlier this month Emma Aorangi, recent Hardie Fellow shared insights on our attendance priority at Principal Forums statewide. Emma spoke about the positive outcomes of regular school attendance, including improved learning outcomes. By understanding ongoing school absence as a result of complex issues from within and outside school, leadership were called to think differently about attendance. International expert, University of Illinois Assistant Professor Dr Patricia Graczyk supported principals in transferring their understanding of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) used for reading, and applied it to attendance. Hearing about the success of MTSS for attendance internationally is promising for DECYP, as we continue to work more collaboratively and intentionally to improve attendance. #EverySchoolDayMatters #BrightLivesPositiveFutures

  • Every young Tasmanian should have the reading skills they need for life when they leave our school system. A couple of weeks ago, language and literacy expert Emina McLean held talks with principals and shared practical guidance with teachers and literacy leaders on how to implement structured literacy in the classroom. This was such a vital professional learning experience for our DECYP staff. Emina is part of the team that is supporting our Lifting Literacy Implementation plan for the next three years. Learning to read is foundational to all other learning. It is great to see the commitment of our staff and schools to lift literacy in Tasmania. #LiftingLiteracy #BrightLivesPositiveFutures

Lydon chats with the Careerify team about the journey that led him to teaching for the department and what he loves most about the role. “I like to see my students develop their skills and passions. Developing a sense of who they are and finding out what might be possible for later in life. To have the opportunity to have a positive influence at this stage in a young person’s life is pretty special.” Read Lyndon’s full chat with Careerify here: https://lnkd.in/gg3qenk3 #Careerify #BrightLivesPositiveFutures

    • Text reads: "As a teacher, you have to work out what every individual student needs now to get them to the next place they want to go. The challenge is how can I make that happen for each student.” - Lyndon Riggall, English Teacher.
