CCC-Supported Legislation Making Moves & What’s Next In early June, the legislative session of the New York State Legislature ended for summer. At the state level, conversations mirrored a lot of what’s been and is still being discussed at the city level: lack of affordable child care access, high housing costs, and more. While there is still significant work to be done to uplift New York families overall, there was some really good progress made with state legislation that CCC supported. Employers are feeling the impact of our broken child care system on their workforces, so they're stepping into the child care space in order to better recruit and retain working parents. How they implement child care benefits can either help lay the groundwork for the comprehensive, publicly funded child care our communities need—or exacerbate existing inequities in the sector. Instead, our state and country place an undue child care burden on women despite their often needing and wanting to earn a living. As we get closer to the election this November (108 days, not that I’m counting), I’m starting to see more of the usual talking points aimed at moms of younger kids around GOTV. You know, the ones that talk about bringing your kids with you to vote… how it’s a great civic experience for kids,… a bonding moment for mom,… instills responsibility,…. your vote is important so even though schools close and you have a job and now your kids and and and — MAKE SURE YOU VOTE! I’m not going to say any of those statements are wrong, but I am going to say that the part where all this is aimed *completely* at moms should be telling. We’re not asking dads to add yet another thing to their plate, we’re asking *moms*. When people ask why Politisit ‘s Childcare for Voters program is needed if we don’t have lots of data to say moms aren’t voting because a lack of affordable childcare is a barrier to the ballot box, it’s almost ALWAYS followed with some statement about how great it is for kids to go to the polls with mom. We don’t have data because no one is asking. We don’t have data because moms — especially Black mamas and moms of color — just make shit happen. But what if we could make it easier? As the upcoming election draws near, one critical issue that deserves our attention is the state of the children’s care system. Currently, many children and young people in care face significant challenges, from unstable living conditions to insufficient support during their transition to adulthood. These challenges often result in long-term social and economic disadvantages. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. A major policy proposal gaining momentum is the push to make care leavers a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. This change would recognise the unique struggles care leavers face and ensure they receive the support and protection they need to thrive. Why is this important? 1. Recognition and Support: By acknowledging care leavers as a protected characteristic, we can ensure they are given equal opportunities in education, employment, and housing. This recognition would be a significant step towards breaking the cycle of disadvantage many care leavers experience. 2. Increased Funding and Resources: With this legal protection, there could be a substantial increase in funding and resources dedicated to supporting care leavers, providing them with the tools and opportunities to succeed. 3. Raising Awareness: Elevating the status of care leavers to a protected characteristic would raise public awareness about their challenges and foster a more inclusive and supportive society. This election is a pivotal moment. It’s an opportunity for us to advocate for those who have often been overlooked and to push for systemic changes that can have a lasting positive impact on the lives of care leavers. As voters, it’s crucial to consider the policies and commitments of candidates concerning the children’s care system. NEW: Governor Gavin Newsom just released his latest budget. What does this mean for child care in California? Here’s what we know: ✅ No proposed cuts to child care funding, ensuring stability for families and providers. ✅ A continued commitment to collectively bargain with CCPU for fair reimbursement rates for providers. ✅ No mention of strengthening the ECE workforce or expanding child care access—both critical to California’s future. We commend this progress, but the work is far from done.   With California goes the rest of the nation.
