𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐳, 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐞𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 Fascinated by foreign cultures and natural landscapes I always wanted to see the world. One summer, on break from studying Translation at University, I got a job with Iberia at Barcelona Airport that would turn into a dynamic career in aviation that has expanded over 20 years. Across different roles and airlines, I have developed skills in rostering, crew planning, analysis and optimization that equip me with a broad range of tools to solve new challenges. I currently live in Sweden where I get to enjoy nature, daily fika and make time to create illustrations. “Why should I apply to WestJet? What’s it really like working there? I often get asked these questions by peers in the industry who are looking to make their next, and hopefully final career move. My honest answer? It may not be for you. Seriously! But let me explain… We are lucky as pilots to have a few really great options when it comes to our long term employment prospects. That said, there is no “one size fits all” or “greenest grass in the industry” out there because we all want something different and we all perceive different shades of green a different way. I’ve decided to make a post (now 2 because of character limits! Ha.) about what #WestJet has to offer to interested candidates. Here is part 1 of 2; let’s call it lifestyle. ➡️ Scheduling A concept unique to WestJet is socialized bidding. Once a line holder, our most junior pilots can potentially get their top bid preferences. For example, if living in base and you want one day pairings (out and return, sleep in your own bed that night) a “desire 1 day pairings” bid at the top of your bid attributes often yields a month full of one days. Or maybe it’s a specific destination that you would like to overnight in? Maybe 5 day pairings work best? It’s nice to know that you don’t have to wait years to get a desirable schedule. The system certainly isn’t perfect and sometimes it can’t satisfy all of your requests. After all, nobody can have it all. But for myself, as a 1 day pairing type of person, socialized bidding has meant only 2 overnights in 4 months. Yes, read that again. ➡️ Compensation Our B737 Pilot hourly pay is now at a Canadian industry leading scale. WestJet also contributes 9.1% equivalent of our earnings to the WestJet Savings Plan without any Pilot input! There is also ample opportunity for Opentime flying which gives our Pilots more control over their financial goals — so buy the boat! ➡️ A unified Pilot Group represented by a MEC that is for the Group, not for a specific demographic Earlier this year, WestJet Pilots secured a fair Collective Agreement that showed Pilots their worth and showed us a future that we can all row in the same direction towards. Most importantly, it showed how unified as a group we are and how we all care about each other. Witnessing our membership’s actions, I am proud to be a WestJet Pilot. This is my first #LinkedIn non-Tech post ever from my uncomfortable seat in #deutschebahn from Vienna to Hamburg! I don’t know how to phrase this nicely as someone who did pay extra to have a reserved comfortable seat and paid also higher price to book better #ICTrain connection from Vienna to Hamburg. It is #embarrassing for one of the biggest companies in Europe i.e. Deutsche Bahn to sell reserved seats to passengers who don’t want to walk the whole train length 3 times to find a free place and reserve their seat to see that the seat that has been reserved is located in the family area, and in not standard seat for two adults i.e. 90cm bench (see the picture) and also share that very seat with someone that has not reserved the seat🤯! After the bus lines being very unreliable and and flights being very expensive with hours of security check waitings in #germany, #deutschebahn embarrassing behaviour on selling any seat in every corner of the train e.g. family area to (normal size) adults who do not even fit to sit together, disappointed me very big time! It is clear that pushing passengers to pay premium #firstclass is not right! Buying any premium product should be a choice not force #consumerrights ! After all this post is not non-tech post as if #deutschebahn have had a very basic #AI based solution (let alone being #GenAI) to sort the reservations, such an embarrassing incidents could be avoided!!
