This week's transferable skills I want to highlight and celebrate are: Facilitation: Teachers excel at facilitating discussions, leading workshops, and creating engaging learning experiences. These skills are invaluable in corporate training, team-building activities, and client engagements, where effective facilitation drives success and innovation. Asking Questions: Teachers are adept at crafting essential questions that lead to deep understanding and critical thinking. This ability is crucial in roles requiring problem-solving and innovation, as asking the right questions often leads to the best solutions. From running meetings, interviewing people, leading training and development, and managing projects—educators are powerhouses full of foundational skills that work in pretty much any department. So, if you're a Hiring Manager and you see an educator's resume in your list—don't ignore them. 23-year-old me was craving mentorship... I had a job I loved. Incredible clients. Teammates that became close friends. Responsibilities that made me excited to drive to the office every day. But there was one small (ok big) gotcha. Right job. Wrong boss. And with it, a huge hole in my career when it came to internal mentorship. So I made a choice... deciding in that moment that my community of mentors, sponsors and champions would always be built by choice, not by design. I called a contact who had become a trusted friend, a School Superintendent who I got to know during my reporter days. I told him I loved my job, but that I was craving guidance and advice from those in the marcom field, the industry I had just entered. He introduced me to a VP of Marketing at a NYC law firm. That VP of Marketing looped in his close colleague, another marketing leader at a NYC financial firm, so that I could meet the both of them. All it took was one email intro from someone I trusted and a whole new world opened to me. 23-year-old Me started to head to the city regularly to meet these two to discuss things like how to... ✅️ Hire for my first team as a new manager ✅️ Negotiate... salary, opportunities, deals ✅️ Handle tough client interactions with grace ✅️ Navigate multiple internal stakeholder demands ✅️ Embrace an art and science mindset to marketing 2 mentors who I would have normally never collided with. Fantastic mentors who were my sounding boards throughout years of career decisions. And 2 mentors who changed my career trajectory forever. Your community of champions is always one email, call, intro away. 💫 A community by choice 💫

So here is an appreciation post for all the mentors I had the opportunity to connect with and an introductory post for anyone looking forward to mentorship. As I am graduating with a business and marketing degree from York University, with a keen interest in marketing, I wanted to connect with professionals in marketing agencies to understand different job roles, skill sets required to land a job in agencies, and other insights that will make my profile stand out in today’s competitive marketplace. Before discovering GroundFloor, I attended a couple of in-person marketing events hoping to meet the right people. However, I realized that the chances of meeting the right person are slim, especially if you are not an extrovert. Thanks to LinkedIn, I discovered this amazing mentorship and coaching platform called GroundFloor, where I connected with a few incredible professionals in the marketing and advertising fields. I was surprised by the simplicity of the platform. Unlike other platforms where candidates have to fill in numerous details before algorithms connect them with the right mentor, GroundFloor is straightforward. You see a list of mentors. If you feel you can benefit from their experience, just hit 'Book a call' according to the time slot provided by the professional. That’s it. Be ready with your questions for your mentor on the session day from the comfort of your couch. Just think Netflix for entertainment, DoorDash for food, and GroundFloor for mentorship and coaching. I keep hearing dogmatic views on how to conduct effective 1-to-1s. That happens when you focus more on the format than on the purpose. Some of the topics I recommend covering in 1to1s include: * General feelings * Operational topics * Whatever the person needs help with * Feedback, observations * Reflections on career development, personal OKRs, etc These are all excellent places to help surface what the person might be struggling with and what you might be missing as their manager and then come up with clear actions. Take note of the actions, set ownership and deadlines, and follow up. You don't need to make it more complicated than that. I wrote an article a while back that goes through the rationale in more detail. You'll find it in the comments section. Just wrapped up an amazing Professional Development Day with my incredible staff. It wasn't just about learning new skills (although there was plenty of that!), it was about building a stronger, happier team that's ready to rock! We started things off by checking in with each other. I wanted to create a space where everyone felt comfortable sharing any challenges or roadblocks they might be facing. Whether it was managing client expectations, navigating communication hurdles, or just feeling overwhelmed, it was important to create an open dialogue. Remember, we're all human, and even career coaches need support sometimes! By sharing openly, we were able to connect, brainstorm solutions, and offer encouragement. Plus, it just feels good knowing you're not alone! Overall, it was a positive, productive day that left us all feeling reenergized and motivated. Investing in our own development isn't just good for us, it's good for our clients and our business! Extremely grateful for my team!
