One of farms that we are currently leasing land to was featured in the PBS show America's Heartland! We are so proud to be able to work with farmers like José at R&R Fresh Farms and are excited to see his hard work called out. R&R also has an organic farmstand open year-round. It is open on Mondays from 12-6 p.m. and every other day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. U-pick will also be available until fall! 🍓 https://loom.ly/aAD2kWE

Hey, peanut growers! How's your season going? 🌱🥜 Tune in to hear expert insights from Scott Montfort on this year's peanut acreage growth in an interview with our very own Wayne Brown, Nichino Sales Rep. Don't miss out on this valuable conversation! And, fresh from the field, here are some updated numbers: Over 1 million acres of peanuts are expected in the Southeast this year, with 820,000 in Georgia and 190,000 in Florida and Alabama. Due to May's 300% average precipitation in Georgia, planting is behind schedule, with only 75% of acres planted compared to 87% last year. #PeanutGrowers #AgricultureInsights

Iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) looks more like a ball than an iceberg. So, why do we call it that? Its original name was crisphead lettuce. It was developed to stay fresh during the long transport periods on the US Trans-Atlantic Railroad. To preserve it optimally, it was shipped in ice-filled containers as early as the 1900s. And from these ‘icebergs’ in the containers, Iceberg Lettuce got its name. During the mid-20th century, Iceberg Lettuce was a symbol of the expanding U.S. industrial agricultural system. It is now shipped globally and has a three to four week shelf life. In its current form it was first cultivated in the early 20th century, but as a weed lettuce was found growing as far back as 4.500 years ago. Modern day lettuce is still very similar to its wild predecessor L. serriola. The early settlers, bound for the New World, brought it to the U.S. and that makes it one of the oldest crops to be cultivated in the United States. They say to go out and touch the grass once in a while. While you can’t compromise on quality improved seeds for commercial production, some heirloom/open-pollinated varieties thrive with proper care. And the best part? They’re incredibly affordable. A tin of pepper seeds for just N500, which is over 100 grams, compared to N14,500 for less than 5 grams of hybrid pepper seeds from a popular company! Do the math! For beginner farmers/gardeners looking to start on a budget, the local seed market is the way to go! • • • #aridgoldfarms #seed #seedsaving #heirloomseeds #localmarket #sustainability

🌾🌾 GROWER STORY Each year, GRDC's GroundCover follows a group of growers from across Australia as they manage the cropping season. Based at Capella, north of Emerald in Central QLD, Tim Gersbach farms 4000ha with his wife, Courtney, their two young children and his parents, Garry and Cathy. They crop wheat, chickpeas and, occasionally, mungbeans. Sorghum is the main summer crop. Tim says: We decided to spray our sorghum for both heliothis and fall armyworm (FAW) in late March. FAW was in our sorghum heads and then seemed to disappear, burrowing into the ground. They appeared again in the heads though. We discussed the threshold for spraying with our agronomist, Josh Bell, and decided to spray. He has been checking our paddocks once or twice a week. Josh has said the story with FAW is quite complex this year. It has persisted in sorghum heads, compared to the past few years. Based on our soil moisture profile, we are planning to plant more chickpea than usual. The chickpea market looks promising. We had already spread with 120 kilograms/ha of urea and 25kg/ha of CK55 starter, which was done as soon as we’d planted sorghum. We don’t usually put urea on our chickpea paddocks as they are supposed to fix nitrogen. But because we are now planting more chickpea on paddocks that were destined for wheat, we will be able to see how they perform with more urea. Pear harvest in California to kick off mid-July The commencement of pear harvesting in California is anticipated in mid-July, starting with the earliest varieties. Despite challenges posed by the weather during the growing season, the industry maintains a positive outlook on the crop's potential. Chris Zanobini, executive director of the California Pear Advisory Board, has forecasted a decrease in production compared to the previous year, with Bartletts expected to see an 18% reduction and other varieties a 16% decline. "The late rains were the biggest factor" in affecting yields, Zanobini explained to Farm Press, attributing the extended bloom period to the spring showers. #grow🌱 #agriculture #supplychain #trade #usa🇺🇸 #markets #commodities #pears🍐 #california☀️ #yields #forecast #sanjoaquinvalley #decrease #exports

New research on grass varieties on farm - on farm research is a new opportunity for grassland research. Really important to have commercial farmers investigating perennial ryegrass variety performance and persistence #PasturebaseIreland

Recently Debbie, our Co-founder, caught up with U Aye Than, a paddy farmer who’s been using Saltwater Seed Selection in the Irrawaddy River Delta. This seed selection is a low-cost, practical method that uses homemade saltwater solution (you know it’s salty enough when a duck egg floats) to separate and select the best rice seeds. Quality seeds sink to the bottom, half-full or blank seeds float to the surface, and the easily separated seeds allow farmers to grow higher quality paddy that can also increase their yields as much as 15 percent. While this technique is used around the world, the team at Proximity realized back in 2011 that not many farmers here knew about it and started introducing the practice whenever we met with them in their villages. Along with crop advisors showing it to farmers in person, these days we’ve been promoting the Saltwater method in a big way on our digital channels — and U Aye Than gives a glimpse of how widespread the practice has become in the Delta region. Take a listen to what he had to say: #paddyfarming #higheryields #proximitydesigns
