In this episode, Tracey Newman (she/her) and I discuss four common mistakes organisations make that can hinder their ability to innovate successfully. The mistakes covered include a lack of structured innovation processes, internal rather than client-focused innovation, risk-averse leadership styles, and not having a compelling reason for change. Complexity mindtraps are ways that our brains trip us up when faced with complexity. Jennifer Garvey Berger has identified five mindtraps that you can learn about in her book, “Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps”. A couple of them to get you started: We like simple stories. The brain doesn’t like not knowing - so we fill in the unknowns of a current situation based on past experiences. We’re essentially making up half the story and then often forgetting to check the parts that we made up, then getting super confused when the current situation doesn’t unfold like it did last time (which happens all the time in complexity and uncertainty). We like to be right. It feels good to be right, it feels safe to be right. Complexity requires an openness to see the situation you are in from many perspectives. Handling complexity is doesn’t suit a preference to be right, instead we need to be curious, open to multiple perspectives and open to data that proves us wrong. Last summer, we spoke to Jennifer about the five mindtraps and how they play out in our conversations. Check it out 👇 #leadingincomplexity #leadership #changingconversations #changingorganizations

“I think a lot of leadership is older at this point, and so they're really familiar with ideas from the last century. I also think there's not a lot of new options. In the late 2000's, a lot of companies started giving up the standard performance valuation. And then in around 2015, they started re adopting it. And one of the reasons that was there wasn't any alternative.” This is Lori Mazan, leadership expert and coach.
