About us
For centuries there has been a debate about whether leaders must be born into their leadership capacities or whether leadership can be developed in all of us. Findings from history, psychology, business and neuroscience are now clear about this: leaders grow over time, and leadership can be thoughtfully and intentionally nurtured. At Cultivating Leadership, we have lots of ways to support that growth. Using a deep theoretical and research base combined with decades of experience we help leaders become better able to handle the complex, ambiguous, and sometimes conflict-ridden world of today. As we support leaders to grow and develop to their fullest capacity, they change their organisations and their world for the better.

In his latest blog, Bill Pullen asks us “What if love was the most powerful tool in your leadership toolbox?” In today’s fast-paced world, we often think of leadership as strength, strategy, and decisiveness. But what if adding love to the mix—empathy, care, and genuine connection—could completely change the way you lead? Curious about how love could make you a more effective leader? Read our latest blog to explore how this unexpected approach can transform your leadership: https://hubs.la/Q02VK8Gs0 #Leadership #Complexity #Love

Robin Katcher's insights from our latest Not Simple podcast make us pause. We often focus so much on individual leadership success that we forget the power of interdependence—the magic that happens when we lean on others and embrace collective wisdom. How are you fostering interdependence in your work or leadership? Let’s talk about how we can all do this better, in the comment below. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/ehN47iFW #Leadership #HumanFlourishing #Collaboration #CollectiveWisdom

The words we use really do change how we feel and what we do. Are we scared, or are we just paying attention? A simple reframe can make all the difference. #Leadership #MindsetShift #WordsMatter
Are we afraid of something, or are we being vigilant about it? A client I work with couldn’t decide if she was ready to become a manager. She was scared, she said, to lose her work-life balance. When we checked out her existing strategies, it turned out she was actually pretty good at protecting her personal time. We decided the word “afraid” was neither accurate nor productive. Because it wasn’t that she was scared. She was being vigilant. When she thought about her move in terms of fear, she was repelled by the goal. When she reframed and used the word “vigilant,” she felt more optimistic and capable. When we face discomfort and uncertainty, our words matter. What we tell ourselves will shape what we do. So, are you nervous, or do you really care about something? Are you anxious, or are you focused? Negative feelings should not be minimized, but we shouldn’t overuse them either.

How great would it be if we all left work feeling more alive and connected than when we arrived? If you’re in Auckland—or anywhere in NZ or Australia—come join our brilliant colleagues in person to explore how to make workplaces more human. It’s a chance to reflect, recharge, and infuse fresh energy into your leadership... #HumanWork #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture #HumanCentered
We have a dream! Imagine if all our workplaces were places where people left work at the end of the day feeling better about themselves than how they arrived. Imagine the impact on our collective mental health, our families and our communities. Our workplaces are so drastically under-utilised - we could be achieving so much more - both for the purpose of the our organisations and for the sake of the humans in them (and those they touch). Join us, Jim Wicks, Kavita Khanna and myself on the 27th November in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, to learn with other leaders about how to create a more human workplace. Many thanks to the leaders we learnt from as we wrote the book that has inspired this programme; Human Work; five leadership mindsets for humanising the workplace, and all our Cultivating Leadership colleagues and friends who contributed to it. Shout out to our partners, Best Places to Work and EMA! To register, check us out here: https://lnkd.in/gqXk8g_H

A few weeks ago, we shared how polarity management can transform collaboration by embracing both sides of a tension—like speed and inclusion. Now, in the next part of this series, Cornelis Tanis dives even deeper into how this approach can help leaders balance complex challenges that don’t have simple solutions. If you’re ready to explore how to navigate tensions—whether between openness and fairness or creativity and procedure—this is for you. What’s a tension you’re currently balancing that could use a fresh approach? 🔗 Read the blog here: https://hubs.la/Q02S4v9n0 #Polarities #Complexity #Leadership
