👀 I saw a post by Andrew Petcash last week providing some data points on the top 100 professional sports leagues in the world. The following jumped out: 🚌 Professional sports drove $650 billion of the $1.3 trillion global sports industry. There's a lot of meat still on the bone! 🏀 📚 If the NCAA Basketball as a whole was a sports league and the estimated $1B or so annually is accurate, NCAA Basketball would be one of the largest professional sports leagues in the world. 😕 A professional handball league in Germany was the last league on the list to generate $100 million in revenue. 🔬 The distinction about the handball league sent me down a rabbit hole, resulting in me writing a quick case study for sports entrepreneurs on the Handball-Bundesliga. Euroleague Basketball is thrilled to announce the renewal of TV rights in the Italian territory for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup competitions for the 2024-25 season. This ensures that Italian basketball fans will continue to have access to top-tier European basketball action through their preferred platforms, Sky and DAZN.   SKY, the leading media entertainment company in Italy, will broadcast all EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, Virtus Segafredo Bologna, Dolomiti Energia Trento and Umana Reyer Venice games live on Sky and NOW, plus at least two more EuroLeague games every week. In addition to the live games on Sky and NOW, there will also be daily updates on Sky Sport 24, two weekly shows ("Basket Room Europa" every Wednesday and "EuroLeague Mixtape" every weekend) and news reports on the skysport.it website and on Sky Sport's official social profiles. Along with the rest of the world, our customers were keenly watching the Olympic Games. The network peak during the Paris games was driven by Noah Lyle’s incredible win in the Men’s 100m final and post-race analysis. We also saw large uplifts on BBC services during these Team GB moments: 🥇3x as much traffic on BBC (+218%): Men’s Individual Triathlon which saw Alex Yee bring home Gold for Team GB 🥈3x as much traffic on BBC (+215%): Women’s Skeet Shooting final, which saw Amber Jo Rutter collect Silver for Team GB 🥉 3x as much traffic on BBC (+208%): Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, in which Harry Hepworth won Bronze for Team GB Chat on socials was also accelerated by the Games with a peak traffic uplift on X of +39% when Team GB’s Keely Hodgkinson’s raced to victory in the Women’s 800m final. Olympics fever also had an impact on other apps with: 🕹️ -11% decline in Gaming, despite the games being during the school holidays 📺 -29% drop in ITV traffic, due to the BBC streaming the Olympics 📱 Socials were on fire: Facebook saw increases in daily volume of +7% and X up by +11% 💬 Our customers were messaging each other more: Snapchat increasing by +8% and WhatsApp by +7% And in France, there was a +33% uplift in data roaming volume during the games, compared to the same period last year. Para Powerlifting: Structuring the Paralympic ecosystem? In our dynamic world of sports, change is not just inevitable, it's essential for progress. The decision by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to transfer the governance of Para powerlifting to an independent body marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Paralympic sports. Para powerlifting has long been a cornerstone of the Paralympic Games. Since its inclusion in 1984, Para powerlifting has truly captivated audiences worldwide with awe-inspiring displays of athleticism from para-athletes representing over 100 nations. With the decision to spin off from the IPC, Para powerlifting gains the freedom to chart its course, set its priorities, and pursue initiatives tailored specifically to its development and growth. This independence will bring a sense of responsibility and accountability. As Para powerlifting assumes control of its governance, the teams will have to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct: governance structures, stakeholder engagement and priority to the welfare of athletes, from grassroots to Paralympians.
