I can’t count how many times I’ve recommended a patients get a second opinion. I also strongly feel every patient needs a patient advocate. Many (most?) of the people in this space are interested in metabolic health. However a huge advantage of hiring our expertise is the above: patient advocacy and a second opinion (with a very different perspective). We should not forget these important roles we play.

New #HealthAdvocacyMatters blog from The Journal of Health Advocacy: Anticipatory guidance should include nonpartisan information about civic engagement, writes Dr. Naomi Warnick MD, JD of University of Louisville Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. "In our role as physicians, it is imperative that we be well aware of the impact policies put in place by local, state, and federal elected officials have on our professional and personal lives, allowing us to better educate and provide care for our patients." Yes, General Practice deserves more and yes, it looks as though you may be overlooked once again given what your Junior Doctor colleagues have been offered, but right and wrong aside, how much does an additional 4% and therefore c6% in total help? And I don't mean in the 'every little helps' sense or a 'it's not enough because we deserve more' sense, rather a genuine question of whether a 6% uplift pushes the need in any noticeable way? #gpjobs #nhsjobs #generalpractice #primarycare #menloparkprimarycare Menlo Park Recruitment

'When overly-powerful leadership and #legal muscle combine, expect cover-ups and injustice.' An important article by Alicia Clegg in Byline Times . There's an opportunity for everyone to share their views and promote the changes that are so urgently needed: 🔵 NEW UK INQUIRY 🔵 'The Health and Social Care Committee has launched a new inquiry to examine leadership, performance and patient safety in the NHS.' An opportunity to promote working across boundaries, so that we can develop a truly patient-led #NHS ⚫ LINK to Inquiry: https://lnkd.in/e_nYbaxj #law #ethics #accountability #socialcare #health #healthcare #patient #patients #whistleblowing #whistleblower #medicine #nursing #healthprofessionals #healthleadership #healthleaders

Byline Times piece by me on why workplace democracy and legal reform should be front and centre stage for public inquiries. Thanks to everyone who gave me their time and reflections and especially Dr Ed Jesudason whose thoughtful Journal of Medical Ethics’ paper https://lnkd.in/ek9qHwMn prompted and informs the piece.

Our #health system in the UK is in a mess. It has failed to modernise (by this I mean to become fully accountable to #patients and the public, and truly patient-led). Instead, the system has become more and more hierarchical, bureaucratic and crony ridden, mostly as a result of constant meddling & pointless reorganisations instigated by politicians. All political parties in government for the past 30 years have had a hand in this decline. This is hard for me to say as I am proud to have worked in and for the NHS for most of my working life; proud to have been trained in the #NHS and proud of the work being carried out by clinical teams today. Great work which has benefited patients often not because of the leadership, but despite of the leadership. 🔴 I'm retired so I can say what I like. If I were working and said anything even vaguely like criticism, however constructive it was, I would be out of a job and my career would be blighted for life. I'm speaking from experience here, unfortunately 🔴 🔵 I urge everyone to respond to the consultation (link below). 🔵 In your response think forensically and write it as a statement of truth 🔵 Acknowledge the successes and areas that have delivered safe and effective services 🔵 If you are being critical give examples and say if it an opinion or back up what you say with evidence 🔲 If we work together across boundaries we can develop a truly patient-led #NHS 🔲 Link to Inquiry: https://lnkd.in/eJRCTTAQ #law #ethics #accountability #healthcare #socialcare #leadership #NHSleadership #share4safety #patientsafety #patientcare #patientengagement #TeamPatient #robbieslaw #AdsFoundation WhistleblowersUK The Patients Association Healthwatch England Department of Health and Social Care NHS England NHS Care Quality Commission Patient Safety Learning Cabinet Office Department for Business and Trade Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman BBC Newsnight

FEBRUARY IS CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH! ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITY You may have noticed we are spotlighting the patient-family experience of impacts to dental and oral healthcare, and you're right! Children with HIE are at greater risk for certain oral health impacts, and in the context of disability, there is a significant disparity experienced by medically complex children and families to access the same care as typically developing children. You can help shape this research by filling out the survey below: https://lnkd.in/gu_XKTRy Dr. Matt Mara, DDS, a HIE parent, professor, researcher, dentist AND on our Medical Advisory Board, is working on a research project through Boston University as a part of his research in oral health disparities. More information is posted in our closed parent support hub, which can be accessed at: https://lnkd.in/gd-FSyCC #HopeforHIE #HIEresearch #DentalHealthMonth #HIE #HypoxicIschemicEncephalopathy #Research
