Meagan Poole delves into her journey in securing a placement opportunity in the field, and shares some tips and tricks that have been helping her along the way. "With what I've learned in school, I can imagine that part of the general job description likely includes social media monitoring, drafting press releases, media pitches, brainstorming sessions, gathering research, etc. It's important to be eager to learn and open to new challenges. I find that no matter the job, the more effort you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. So, expect the unexpected and don't be afraid to ask questions." 🌐 What are the benefits of attending an internship for those who want to work in the PR industry? 🔜 My graduate studies are coming to an end. Recently, I have seen many junior students sharing their internship life, which is very fabulous and rich. Some also said that they were very confused during work. When I first started an internship, I also had this confusion: How to make work plans? How to set career development goals? I want to share my experience through the post, to help you. I have had 5 internship experiences, which not only helped me get a full-time offer but also gained my perspective and skills. As someone who has both been an intern and coached new interns, I would like to share 4 points of trainee thinking. I hope you can jump out of the trivial internship work itself and think about the greater meaning of internships. 1⃣️Open Horizons: How a company works A company often requires the cooperation of multiple departments to maintain normal operations. Different positions have different responsibilities and outputs, which of course also correspond to different threshold requirements and income levels. In a PR agency, it generally includes operations, client executive, media executive, planning, marketing, etc. Entering an advertising company for an internship can help us directly understand the composition of the public relations industry and build job awareness. It is also the first stop to enlighten us on the concept of "agency". 2⃣️Setting a Benchmark: How professionals PRer work You can set a benchmark for your future work. Learning their strengths, and observing their way of thinking and working habits, this kind of close observation and imitation is not something we can get in university courses or pieces of literature. For example, when I was interning at a local advertising company in Sydney, I saw that my group member would synchronize their work progress with everyone in the team channel at the end of every day so that everyone could complete the work more efficiently the next day. 3⃣️Learn skills: how to write media releases, how to review influencers Internships help individuals develop and enhance a range of skills essential for a career in PR. These skills may include communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal skills, time management, problem-solving, and adaptability. Exposure to real-world challenges allows me to refine these skills in a practical setting. 4⃣️Confidence Building In fact, an internship is an opportunity to provide an error zone. Because interns will not have a chance to connect with core clients. Even if there is a mistake in your task, there will be room for mitigation. I also made some micro mistakes during my four internships, but every time I made a mistake, I could learn from it, review it, and gain confidence in my abilities. The next time you tackle a task, you'll be more confident. This confidence-building has been of great help to my career path. #PRintern #studyaustralia

Founder, The PR Habitat | Public Relations & Gen Z Lab Ambassador @ Edelman | B2B Comms + Brand Strategy | 2024 BTPRS PR Pros Rising to the Top
I often come across creators sharing internships and advice, but there's a lack of representation for public relations. I met with some aspiring #prpros (Manpreet Wasan, Palak Bagrecha, and Alexandra Lucaj). I realized there's not a lot of guidance for students looking to get in the door. I’ve received invitations to interview at top agencies like BerlinRosen, Highwire, Edelman, BCW Global, and Walker Sands. Here’s how you can you can get these interviews too: ✅ Identify a focused list of agencies you want to work for. Are you looking for a large or mid-size agency? What are some of the practice groups that interest you like tech, fashion, etc? ✅ Go directly to their careers page to find listings and apply. A lot of agency job postings are tricky to find since they aren’t promoted the same as in-house roles. ✅ Create a portfolio that showcases writing samples. You can look through my posts for the example that I recommend to communications majors. ✅ The entry-level titles to look out for are Account Coordinator, PR Coordinator, PR Assistant, Assistant Account Executive (AAE), PR Intern, and Post Graduate PR Intern. If you found this helpful, give it a like and repost it for others in your network! #publicrelations #pr #fashionpr #techpr #internships #earlycareer #prssa #publicrelationsagency

Starting a career in Public Relations can be an exciting, rewarding yet sometimes a daunting and overwhelming journey. We sat down and asked TMC directors Sally Brown and Chrissy Biasotto for their advice on how to get noticed and get your foot in the door in PR. INTERNING, INTERNING, INTERNING Both Sally and Chrissy landed their first roles by rolling up their sleeves and gaining practical work experience with unpaid internships until an agency hired them. There is no better way to learn than being on the ground and experiencing the work firsthand. “Intern at a few different agencies to get a cross section of experience to add to your CV and for you to get an understanding of what you like and don’t like. We will always look when hiring entry level roles if a candidate has had a cross section of work experience.” Key Pointers for Candidates / Interns wanting to get a head start and a career in PR: - Being present in your internship and introducing yourselves to the decision makers / directors of the business. We always remember someone who has made themselves known to us! - Be proactive, follow up with your directors or direct line of report mentioning how much you enjoyed your time interning and how interested you are in the role. Ask advice on what you need to do in order to be considered for a role. - Be gracious and eager to learn. Put your hand up for any task, don’t be precious and get stuck into hard work. Volunteer to assist at events to gain a full 360 aspect of the role. - Don’t be scared to ask questions when you are interning, you are there to learn as much as you can. - If you love an internship and really can imagine yourself working their ask if you can extend your internship and be transparent that the reason for extending is in hope for a role at the agency you are interning. - Don’t be shy to submit examples of your work to Directors to show your skill set, it might be a press release or an example of a pitch on behalf of one of the agencies brands. - Make sure you are following the agency on social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn) to prove your interest in the agency. - Have a full understanding of the business and their clients.

Head of Global Communications, Fractional Chief Communications Officer, Corporate Communications Consultant
I just spoke to a friend's daughter, a rising college senior about to begin a PR agency internship. She asked some great questions, one of which was who do I think are the best PR people and why (their backgrounds). I've been in the industry a fairly long time and have worked with lots of comms people--some great, some good, some average, some not-so-average. The best PR people I've worked with include two former segment producers for local network TV affiliates, a former broadcast business reporter, a former ski instructor and a college soccer player who studied accounting. Why do I think they're the best? It's because they know how to quickly craft concise and compelling stories, and they're incredibly pragmatic. #PR #publicrelations #careers

Last night, I had the honor of joining a panel for EPICS | External Programs, Internships & Career Services to speak with current Northwestern University School of Communications students about careers in communications. In the discussion, I reflected on all that I’ve learned over the last four years and shared the following four pieces of advice: 🏢 There are benefits to working for both big and small companies - There's always pressure for your first job out of school to be big and splashy. From my experience, however, there are immense benefits to starting your career at a smaller organization, such as being able to stretch above your level and work on a variety of high-visibility projects. In fact, although I didn’t remember this until I looked back at my email, I asked my career advisor her thoughts on this exact topic on April 5, 2020 right after I got my full time offer from Spool (and I’m sure glad I listened to her advice)! 📱Not only is it easier than ever to make your own content, but to consume what others are posting - As someone who loves consumer insights and geeking out over PR campaigns and ads, I recommend using social media to keep a pulse on what is trending, how brands are activating, and what is resonating with different audiences. Use what you learn to inform your thoughts on the industry and anything you’re working on, including class projects. 🤝 Approach every ask with a relationship building mindset - Whether you’re looking to network for a job or contact journalists with a pitch, being genuine in wanting to get to know that person before you broach the topic of your end goal goes a long way. ✨ Every experience is valuable - Learning what you don’t like is just as important as learning what you do. It's knowing how to talk about the skills you learned and how you will translate them to a new role that makes all the difference. Plus, it’s being able to bring those unique experiences to a job that helps you standout as a candidate. At the end of the panel, I shared that my favorite part of working in PR is the ability to be immensely creative, and then to anchor those ideas in strategy, data, and insight that make them make sense for the brand and consumer. Thank you Laura Myers for inviting me to join this panel and for allowing me to share my favorite parts of the job and talk about a day in the life of a PR professional!

My Journey into the PR World: A Student's Quest for Experience! As a student deeply fascinated by the ever-evolving landscape of Public Relations, I find myself at the beginning of what I hope to be an enriching journey into this dynamic field. Here are the steps I took to gain practical experience in PR: 1. Seeking Internships: Lookout for internships that offer a real glimpse into the day-to-day operations of a PR agency or an in-house PR team. I believe that such opportunities are pivotal in understanding the nuts and bolts of campaign planning, execution, and client management. 2. Volunteering for a Cause: Passionate about various causes, I'm volunteering my time to help non-profits with their PR efforts. This not only allows me to contribute positively but also helps me hone my skills in crafting press releases, managing social media, and event promotion. 3. Embracing the Digital Sphere: Recognizing the significance of digital PR, I'm actively working on building a digital footprint. Be it starting a blog, managing social media for a startup, or creating engaging content, I'm exploring all avenues to understand how to make a brand stand out online. 4. Applying Classroom Knowledge: Be keen on applying theoretical knowledge from my coursework to real-world scenarios. By treating academic projects as more than just assignments, I learnt to approach them as genuine PR campaigns, which is a fantastic way to develop strategic thinking and creativity. 5. Networking: Understand the value of networking in PR. Hence, I stepped out of my comfort zone to connect with industry professionals, attend webinars, and join PR-related groups. Each interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow. This journey is just beginning, and I'm both excited and curious about where it will lead. I'd love to hear from fellow students and professionals about their experiences, advice, or any opportunities that can help me grow in the PR field. Let's connect and share our stories! 🚀 #PublicRelations #StudentLife #CareerJourney #Networking #DigitalPR
