It’s Christmas in July. Sort of! It’s Amazon Prime Day. In recent years, Amazon’s Prime Day has been a huge hit among consumers. Today has us reminiscing about the season the PRA Nashville team helped the e-commerce powerhouse bring their people together for the holidays. We partnered with Amazon to create a winter wonderland holiday event, to thank the drivers who had already worked so hard all year long and were about to enter an unprecedented holiday delivery season. More than 100 staff and entertainers brought this brand activation to life. Entertainment vignettes included acrobats, fire dancers, ice skaters, ballerinas, carolers and of course, Santa. Closing arguments have finished in the US government’s biggest challenge of Big Tech yet—a suit brought against Google over paying other companies to feature its search engine. The ruling in this case is sure to set precedent, with a number of other cases following right in line: Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Google again all being brought to court in antitrust cases. Friday’s New York Times article by Cecilia Kang and David McCabe is a reminder that the furor over the concentration of power in Big Tech is more than just idle talk. Closing arguments ended in the US government’s biggest challenge yet, with Judge Amit P. Mehta’s ruling expected in the coming weeks and sure to set precedent. Google is accused of illegally protecting their monopoly by paying other companies, like Apple and Samsung, to feature its search engine. This practice is not so dissimilar from some of the deals we see underpinning advances in AI, where complex funding agreements from big donors require use of the funder’s products, such as cloud services or hardware. As Friday’s article points out, this is just the first in a series of high profile cases coming: with Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Google (again) all fighting government antitrust suits. These outcomes will be critical for all tech players, not only for their legal implications regarding such practices, and also how they impact innovation, market dynamics, end consumers, and the behavior of regulatory agencies going forward.
