On this World Food Day, let's delve into the crucial link between water, SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) , and the theme "Water is Life, Water is Food, Leave No One Behind". Water scarcity and crisis loom large, especially with a growing population. India receives around 1000mm of rainfall, while countries like Israel manage with less than 500mm, emphasizing the importance of efficient water management. The focus on big dams shouldn't overshadow alternative approaches. Bangalore, once the 'City of Lakes,' now struggles due to disappearing water bodies. It's imperative to shift our paradigm towards groundwater management, the invisible giant beneath us. The per capita consumption in urban areas, often exceeding 135 liters per day and sometimes even 500 liters, calls for a reevaluation of our water usage. Let's not forget about water footprints. Leather footwear, for instance, leaves a staggering 8000-liter footprint. It's high time we address these unseen impacts. Agriculture also demands our attention. Instead of irrigating fields, we should be irrigating crops based on agroecological conditions. Government policies, especially in procurement, need to diversify beyond the staple crops.
